ad aware not working - October 3rd, 2002, 04:11 PM

ok, I set ad aware up for a scan.......
it scans normal........
until it hits the C:\temp folder, then it freezes and refuses to function. What do I do?

I would start by checking the temp folder - October 3rd, 2002, 05:27 PM

for any suspicious files and delete anything you dont need/ if anything looks suspicious Id delete that too. wait, I guess it could also be something as simple as a really fragmented drive. do you defragment regularly? if you download to your temp file a lot it could just be real fragmented....
I tend to keep my temp file empty except when I am extracting a file or ripping one... if you keep having that problem I would just delete the contents and then empty the recycling bin and run adaware again. there is no such thing as a necessary file any more- except for the obvious I guess- you can always find it again.... especially if you've got a cable modem. :fire

me? I don't run kazaa. I have kazaa lite, but I stopped using it since its a major resouce drain. And I defraged last week, it was the day after that gave me problems.

There could be two reasons (one or both at once) that I know of:
as gorphon said above your drive might need to be defragmented.
it could also be that the c:\temp is VERY large and extra time is needed to scan it.

the usual reason ad-aware freezes has to do with a conflict between a ref file and a version update Caitlyn. try updating both the ad-aware engine and the ref file and scan again.

temp files - October 13th, 2002, 07:03 PM

if your currently not running any applications that might be using temp files. Just delete everything in temp folder and keep going.

also make sure you have newset version of adaware and of course newest ref file.

you should be ok...

puters, can be really frustrating sometimes, but once you get it going, it's smooth sailing...for awhile :-)

Peace!

try running - October 13th, 2002, 10:32 PM

spybot I do not have the link handy but it is like adawair but has the ability to find different stuff. I run both adawair and spybot every now and then. windows systems seem to back up everything. One thing that can hang some of these scaning systems is system restore. It keeps backup restore points in temp folders. I would nose around these and see if anything odd is in there. good luck
