Imo it's impossible to put a book into a movie. You'd need at least 3 x 3 hours saga like LotR, and even then you need to take a lot of shortcuts. I'd prefer seeing a quality scifi series with a continuous plot that is based on a book or is at least written entirely before shooting. Hate that episodical crap that never progresses or goes anywhere. Take X-Files for example. For a while they managed to create an illusion that it was going somewhere, but soon it became obvous that it wasn't.

Yeah, I gave up on X-Files sometime right after the movie.

I think theyre making the Davinci Code into a movie....
"Treason", or the Ender's Game saga books by Orson Scott Card would make some great movies...

if done correctly...otherwise, no matter what book u use, the movie blows....

back to the x-files... I wanna to say, that I really loved TV series. It attracted me to the TV at late evenings... but whats concerned with the movie - it disappointed me a little bit.

Yeah it wasn't bad, just not what I was hoping for after the first episodes. Nothing ever really happened, nothing ever was solved, the episodes had less and less anything to do with each other. In the end there was no story.
