How to speed-up freenet -
December 21st, 2004, 11:13 AM
Hi there, latest tips on how to improve your speed was by Roamerick somewhere february on this forum.
I did the things he suggests and freenet is running right now on my computer. (the "store-map" in programfiles>freenet is filling up with data). Are there any more tricks?? Should we update or, not update freenet?? Let's help eachother here. post by roamerick: -go to www.freenetproject.org and dload the latest freenet stable build -Install it, but don't run it -go to www.freenetproject.org/snapshots and download: freenet-unstable-latest.jar (rename to freenet.jar) unstable.ref (rename to seednodes.ref) -Copy these two files over the originals in your freenet folder -Run freenet! You should now be running an unstable (dont be fooled by the name) build. Now double-click on the freenet icon in your tray (for Win), the web interface will load in your default browser (useMozilla FireFox for better anonimity!). Go to the Dolphin's Freenet Index and start exploring the weird world of Freenet. NOTE for router/firewall users: You may need to right-click the blue icon, click Configure, go into the Serious Geeks panel, allow IP changes, go into Normal panel, and change your IP to your WAN IP (i.e. the one your router has as seen from the internet). When you're a bit better settled, find yourself Frost and FUQID for all your newsgroup and downloading needs. They work like a charm now. Good luck, and enjoy. __________________ Roam Last edited by Roamerick : February 28th, 2004 at 10:12 AM. |

My biggest beef with freenet is with the data store. If I leave it running. It downloads stuff to my computer, It could be child porn. But I will never know. Who would want that on their computer. DISTRIBUTING it to others? No way! I just hope there is a way to prevent the storage of things you don't want.

Could someone clear something up for me?
Looking at my IP address set in the Node Address section under the 'Normal' tab, it was set to "localhost". Having just read (a dozen times) the Freenet help guide, am I right in thinking that this address should be my IP address ie, 220.etc.xxx.xxx. I am rather confused to say the least. I should say Freenet was working ok (albeit slow) and I am just playing with a few settings trying to speed it up. Port forwarding has really confused me... Frost - I can't even get it working and there doesn't seem to be a Frost guide for absolute dummies out there? The help guide says: "1e. Frost There is not much to installing Frost. Just create a "frost" folder in "Program Files" and extract the files to it. You can create a shortcut for it using the following settings (Windows NT/2K/XP): Target: %windir%\System 32\javaw.exe -jar frost.jar %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 Start in: "C:\Program Files\frost\" Icon: %Program Files%\frost\jtc.ico When you first run it, Frost will create a key signature for you". What's that mean in ultra simple plain English??? |

a) Open the Windows Control Panel (I am assuming you are on Windows) and open the Java icon in there. Look for the version that it reports. b) Open a command line window (from the start menu, use the "Run" option and type cmd there). Inside that window, type java -version and press return. It will tell you what version of Java you have. 2.- Depending on the version of Java you have, download the corresponding version of Frost from here: http://jtcfrost.sourceforge.net/download.html 3.- Once you have downloaded it, uncompress the zip file to the directory where you want Frost to reside and once you have done that, just double click on the file called frost.jar or execute the file called frost.bat (both of them will be in the directory you uncompressed the zip to). If you have further questions, please, do not hesitate to ask (here or on the forum on Frost's website http://jtcfrost.sourceforge.net). Kind regards. PD. I updated the help information in the page you mentioned. |
