How beta is beta? - May 9th, 2002, 10:46 AM

Hi guys,

I have been using WinMX 2.6 for quite a while and am quite happy with it (aside from some stability issues). I wanted to wait until WinMX 3.0 was finished, but the betas (currently at 10) seem to be taking forever. How stable is the beta? If you've ever used Exact Audio Copy, you'd know that program has always been in beta, but it's been pretty damn stable every release. Is the WinMX beta that stable? I am just worried about screwing something up on my computer (I'd say I'm above average in computer skills). Is the install/uninstall very clean?

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Andy

I had some crash issues from beta 3-7 that were resolved with beta 8.

didnt have beta 9 long enough to have a prob, beta 10 seems to have improved its ability to search for more sources some.

But you can install the beta version and use 2.6 or the current beta (not at the same time though) Give it a shot, the multi-source d/ling will be great when everyone migrates. Open/slavanap problems seem 2b the only real issues left. I have trouble remotely queueing on open/slavanap servers. no probs at all on wpnp though.

I think the wpnp network is becoming a great p2p tool, but something must be done regarding share minimuims set by users for those d/ling from them. leeches were one of the reasons I avoided the wpnp network on 2.6. But the new wpnp is proving indespensible, so i guess i will jsut have 2 deal with it until they give up anti leech options.

I still have those problems with WinMX 2.6 also. I suspect it's the culprit also when I start downloading a bunch of files over night, and then in the morning the program's crashed and disappeared and nothing showed up.

Everytime I look for something with WinMX, I always get zillions of hits on the OpenNap servers and barely anything on WPNP. But from the sound of your comments and others, that may be improving.

I think I shall try installing the beta tonight.

One reason for getting more hits in open nap is that a lot ppl are logged on many servers at once. The search registers the same file, from the same user present at different servers. In reality, you end up picking hits that are redundant.

I do admit though that numbers of user on the beta wpnp is pretty low for now. Hopefully they'll go when full version of winmx 3 comes out.

a few other points. They greatly improved the retry/findsources results with beta 10.

Also opennap servers are now rearranging them selves in order to users on server on server window. (like it did in 2.6)

Yeah I had that prob with 2.6 with 4 different os(98se,ME,2k,xp) Have run the beta versions under 2k and xp. havent had it crash since beta 7. beta 3-7 were the worst. But now would not be a bad time to jump in. But the remote queuing on opennap is worse. since beta 3 I have went to 2.6 on occasion bc i needed to be able to queue up, and was unable in 3.0. Its like opennap is becoming a stepchild for winmx.

winmx beta seems fairly stable - May 10th, 2002, 03:30 PM

I have had no problems with the winmx beta, well maybe one problem.
I made sure to install the beta in a different directory then the 2.6 and still when I uninstalled the first beta it also lost the uninstall for the 2.6 (not the app. just ablity to use add/remove)as well. I just reinstalled 2.6 and then installed new beta. I probably could have installed the new beta over the first, but sometimes that doesn't work totally correct. So I tried to play it safe and got a surprise. :hole

I normally end up uninstalling the old beta first, before intalling the new on. Otherwise when I start the program its starts up the old version.
