Smile new Gnucleus comments - May 9th, 2002, 09:45 AM

Hey guys,

I just downloaded Gnucleus yesterday due to some good commentary on this forum. Just some thoughts on the program.

I really like it. It's the first file sharing program in a while that I've felt like using longer than five minutes (I've been using WinMX [mostly, when the hell is 3.0 going to be finalized?!?] & AG [occasionally] for quite a while and Kazaa & BearShare just frustrated me). I shared about 2400 files (as a test). The hashing didn't take too long. Searches were relatively quick. Multisource downloading worked very well. Very stable program (unlike WinMX 2.6) and I love the fact that it's open source. (If I could program, I'd help!)

Some things I miss:
1) searching for rare files doesn't turn up as many hits as WinMX 2.6, this will probably change with time as people migrate to Gnutella

2) the ability to browse other people's collections, I find this is a great way to discover new music

3) harder to collect full albums at the same bitrate

Overall, I think I shall use Gnucleus for searching for individual songs, but since I usually search for full albums I'll probably stick to WinMX 90% of the time.

This should probably be a separate thread, but why are people so down on OpenNap? Is it the fact that it's more centralized and easier to shut down? I think WinMXs ability to work on its own P2P network and OpenNap is a great combo. It'd be nice if Gnucleus did the same.

Thanks for reading,

Andy
