Remembering AOL - Still Scared - October 11th, 2004, 05:07 PM

I just replied to a post about using p2p programs with 56k. It made me remember the days of AOL ... Compuserve (when i was banned from AOL) Back in the prog days (AOL chat spammers .. mail bombers etc) I remember how gay the chats were because of all the hosts. They would ban u untill u called them and so on ... The times when Cable/DSL wasnt avail in my area. The only good thing I got really from AOL was when My mother switched bank's and cut the card # AOL had off ... and they just sent me emails and crap about me needing to update my account info lol. This went on for like 1 1/2yrs. AOL blows .... There was alot of cussing while using it. Thank god I have moved on.

Feel free to post ur experiences with AOL (If u were stuck in the 56k era as I was)

Was using AOL at my parents home the other day. Its so easy to forget how bad it is till you are forced to use it. Makes my blood pressure rise!

WTF are you guys talking about? AOL was the best way to get warez up until about a month ago when they started deleting mails after two days. I love aol and I prefered to use it to download over everything expect topsites/ftp. I hope AOL will come back one day. It was fast as newsgroups and no download limit from isp. GG AOL

it's aol, from what I remember, you could get the stuff from an aol chat similar to irc and it would send a sertain sized email with attached files.

I know what he's talking about. it was some IRC thing or similar. It was supposedly really good but it only worked with AOL

yea AOl did used to be a tight serve, compared to some things people call "the best". I guess it's all about who and what you know. FTP's are preferable to me.

I wasnt' and AOL user, but I remember the days when it took weeks to get an application... if the link was still valid by the time you got to the 50th rar file. I never had problems with censoring and I have been to some chatrooms where there probably should have been some oversight.

I still relive the nightmares when I go home to visit my parents who are still in a third-world internet area (read: can't get broadband).

jaded by your desire, you were so pure
lived to please, always a beautiful smile
look into my eyes, imagine peace, happy

Late 1999. After waiting on hold for 20 minutes.

ME: Hello,
AOL: Hello,
ME: Yes, I want to cancel my service.
AOL: Is there anything we can do to change your mind.
ME: No.
AOL: What is the reason your cancelling.
ME: Too slow, Pacific Bell(now Verizon) is offering DSL in my area.
AOL: We have a, bring your own service package.
ME: No.
AOL: What if we give you three months free
ME: Why I have DSL.
AOL: Well sir, you get AOL's trusted content and services for just 9.95 a month.
ME: NO THANKS
AOL: Are you sure
ME: absolutly
AOL: Why
ME: Just cancel my service, OK
AOL: We have offers for free concerts, movies, trips...
ME: Just cancel my service.
AOL: We have ...
ME: Just cancel my service
AOL: Well sir, our records indicate that your next payment is due within five days. You must cancel you service within ten days of your next billing otherwise you well be charged for next month.
ME: What, that doesn't make any sense?
AOL: What do you mean?
ME: Fine, just make sure it's cancelled.
AOL: Well sir, I can't cancel your service for an upcomming pay period until that pay period.
ME: What!
AOL: Company policy.
ME: Just cancel my service!
AOL: Sir, please calm down.
ME: What is your name
AOL: As I told you prevouisly, my name is Mark.
ME: What's your last name Mark.
AOL: My employee identification number is ######.
ME: Well mister Mark employee identification number ######, just cancel my fucking service.
AOL: I'm sorry sir, You must call back during the next pay period.
ME: (Hang up the phone.)

This is not an exaggeration. They kept charging me for a service I wasn't using and Bank of America couldn’t block every transaction resulting from AOL. Therefore, I had them block every charge totaling $21.95. I was then contacted several months later by an AOL collector; I was told that I owed $65 in services. I got a lawyer which cost me $105, to write a formal, certified letter to those bastards, to stop their harassment.

It was the best $105 I have ever spent. I didn't have to pay their $65 and I still have 800+ credit rating.

They sent me a letter of appology, and insured me the party responsable was repremended. I replied to their letter and told them no one I ever know well ever use their service.

AOL
Pros
- Cool chats ... meet girls in city chats (ex - Northcarolina, greensboro) Go to lesbian chatrooms and try to trade pics with ppl without getting "TOS" by gay aol hosts.
- Email .... easy, fast emails.

Cons
- Everything except listed above.

AOL stole like 20 squid from me. I called to cancel and they offered me an extra month free, so I said 'yes', then they didnit cancel the account and started charging me again after the free month was up. I called my credit card company and they siad that this was a common problem with AOL in the UK.
