New System New Problems. - August 25th, 2004, 02:56 AM

Alright guys I finally got a big check so I decided I should go out and buy a system.

I just bought the following:

Intel Pentium 4 LGA775-pin 3.0GHz 800FSB 1MB Cache

I would have gone with gigabyte for my board but the parts are so new most vendors dont have them yet and I would have to buy online so I bought the MSI 915G.

Geforce PCX 5300 128 :]

Alright, I installed the processor and everything worked fine, Windows installed extremely quickly, I installed my most basic chat programs and file sharing stuff along with a video game or two.

Anyway I shoved all of my video game settings on low and sound stuff on low, installed the drivers for my hardware already, but I kept noticing I was getting FPS drops like crazy when about 4 or 5 people are fighting right next to me.

I restart the computer and I check the CPUs temperature 160 degrees fahrenheit.

Turned off the CPU and removed the fan from the motherboard, I know 160 is way too hot so I decided to use my own grease, turned out my stuff was the counterfeit grease )that I had applied, not the stuff that came with CPU) and the system starts up for like 3 seconds and shuts off, I know its thermal related so I know I need a high grade thermal grease for this stuff.

Now on to my question:

Is there anything more suitale than the Arctic Silver 5 out in the market right now? And will my CPU be able to use it and run nice?

I will be getting water cooling next month to combat these temperature problems, maybe then I can start overclocking :]

the stock processor/grease that comes with the P4 is usually enough to keep the processor cool.
I would check your motherboard settings(BIOS) to see if youre applying too much voltage or have the cpu overclocked.
Also make sure that your case fans are working properly.....

I had a similar problem when my computer reported a consistent 85 degrees celsius, even when cold. I flashed the BIOS with a later update, and everything is fine now.

Arctic silver is still the best as far as I know. The latest pentiums just run hot though, so some high temps are normal.

Arctic Silver has a guide to applying the thermal paste, may want to follow it, I know it dropped my temps a few degrees. http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_s...structions.htm

"was getting FPS drops like crazy when about 4 or 5 people are fighting right next to me." Now, I may not be an expert, but that isn't an overheating problem, seems like your system is most likely underpowered, and I'd bet on it to be the video card. (Though, I would have bought a different processor too, like a shiny new Athlon 64 3200+ (with MSI K8N Neo Platinum) over the P4 3.0GHz/MSI 915G, which would have come out to be basically the same price).

Also use a utility like FRAPS to be sure your FPS are really tanking like you think. Your FPS might not be that high to begin with...

Was not able to get my hands on any Arctic Silver products, however I was able to find a comparable thermal grease made by Antec and they make good quality products so I dont think I will have any problems with them, the grease has extremely low temperature resistance 0.0024 celcius per square inch.

Well wish me luck everyone, as soon as I find out how much to apply Ill be testing it out. :]
