Downloading shared files threatens security
by Sgt. 1st Class Eric Hortin
2004-04-23
FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. (Army News Service, April 22, 2004) ? People spend hours in front of their computer screen, downloading music or new movies from the Internet, and not paying a cent, the Army considers such action on government computers to be a security threat.
One program that is used to downloaded files is Peer-to-Peer (P2P) architecture. It is a type of network in which each workstation has the capability to function as both a client and a server. It allows any computer running specific applications to share files and access devices with any other computer running on the same network without the need for a separate server. Most P2P applications allow the user to configure the sharing of specific directories, drives or devices.

naaah, they're just talking about any p2p prog in general... They're saying that if an Army employee is using this, they may have inadvertantly shared things they should not have, and are using up Army bandwidth to use p2p.

Not any one p2p specifically...

....maybe if we hang on DC long enough, we'll find somebody who's shared the whole corporate Army drive, and then we'll really know what happened in Roswell, and who shot JFK...

Working in Signal in the army, some of those other method that they say can't be discussed is IDS (Intrusion Detection System). What it basically does is use signatures of different P2P protocols to determine if a packet is being sent by a P2P program. It's quite effective, but not implemented everywhere. Second, there will never be a P2P program installed on computers containing sensitive information... because these computers are never linked to the Internet. Those router adjustments they were talking about, it's bullshit. Everything that has to do with NAT or PAT and main accesslists are configured on the firewall. The only thing we do on a router is general accesslists and bitbucket routing. Syslog is used to scan and trace any user that is participating in P2P, but finding competent operators that can script it efficiently is a bitch. Any information that has to be secured is run through IPSEC. Furthermore, none of the information I have provided will help anyone hack into and system in the army. My opinion is that they are bitching about the use of resources. As a network administrator it's their job to make it secure, not to blame it on users that don't know any better. He's just covering his ass. But that's just my opinion.

If you grab them by the balls, their hearts and minds will follow.
