Jorge appears in French Magazine - April 2nd, 2004, 06:46 PM

I did a 3 question interview in this months issue of Net@scope, Frances leading tech magazine. Since I cannot read french, i am not sure what they talk about besides my interview. So to all you French Zp members out there, let me know if you can translate this article online.

if i blow it up real big and squint it looks like

1 "of the p2p systems actually available, do you consider dc one of the most powerful?"

"dc is a [something] application," ....i can't see the words

2 "are you aware of the total number of hubs [available]? which are the most important?"

"it's simple, ...thousands of hubs (public and private) ..." illegible

3 "is dc a good alternative to kazaa and emule[...]?"

"given that the architectures are completely different [it's hard to compare them?], ...personally, i recommend dc [...]"

Direct Conect

The Kingdom of peer-to-peer

3 questions to Jorge Gonzales
webmaster of zeropaid.com (portal specialised in P2P)

Of all the P2P systems currently available, do you consider Direct Connect to be the most powerfull ?

DC is a very powerfull application, which allows it's users to set up public or private trading hubs on the internet. It's an excellent program for people who like to download full albums for example, because DC allows retrieving entire directories. So you have a choice between taking single files or the entire folder. Furthermore, DC keeps getting bigger and getting new net users every day ! I think this system will still remain polpular for a long time within all the file sharing solutions. DC is also a very usefull tool for people who work on a network or for students. It doesn't only concern pirates !

i agree DC hubs are Kingdoms.. with king like and queen like patriarchal roles for the admins/ ops , totaly centralized in nature.

it's a big question for me the validity of WASTE over DC and the features and reasons y.

lots of hub software automatically announces or has the option to announce to tracker list servers IP associations and Feds scan with mos++ like toolz
dc hub has a large chat room that people have no choice to not be in or not, heavy on server lag, searches too
dc is completely centralized an attack on the hub server runner causes network disruption
all chat , private or main chat. goes thru the server in plain readable text that can be logged
all data transferred between all dc clients are totaly unencrypted ripe for a carnivore type snooping
dc requires somebody to sacrifice for all the others by having the responsibility to keep the hub running 24.7, have cared for security and police others all while themselves being police targets.
there is a constant war against people who are labeled leeches and mod client runners or sharing anything that is distasteful to a admin or op at any particular time, even having the 'wrong' opinion.

while i think it all understandable that people would place themselves in archaic type hierarchies to get protection i find it much more advantageous to have the opposite type of hierarchy , decentralization bottom up power. Pure P2P. where each individual in a group can allow or not keys or ips of each (kinda like a radical decentralized soulseek derivitive), thus sharing as they see fit with anybody on there mesh or even form there own mesh and all have the ability to invite people into a mesh or meshes.

having multiple eqaulitarian chat rooms #chat and hidden ones &1337 etc
internal file and folder linking
sends ,autoaccept by default
total control over your own bandwidth, slots and everything else imaginable about yourself
changeable nick . key stays the same
passive to passive transfers, firewall to firewall by unique mutual aide routing, found in other p2ps like BT MUTE freenet
as powerful search as DC but more. Faster than MS windows search .folder names, file extensions , partial name matching & a filter.
totaly secure chat and file transfers with RSA blowfish encryption
no server, no downtime, more stable,
stable , alpha 1.4.2 or any other haven't crashed.
can run as many multiple instances in one or on many meshes.
internal and external linking in chat waste:// http:// www
ability to set up with near complete anonymity. (use max length nick [hides your], disable browse and leve enable search, option to disassociate nick from transfer enabled & set up your allow IP & key lists with people you trust) in this situation you are about running MUTE on a WASTE mesh.
back up and move identity with private key and memorized password
small 196k , low mem use.
no 50 users limit, router/listerner ratio is the limit as seen by phatbot virus that uses waste tech and the nullnet

enjoy. if you have any opinions on this comparison and contrast between meshes and hubs. i'm interested in things i may not have thought of. and also interested to explain any other part of p2p culture and it's anarchist (atonomus self organized dirrect action concencus affinity group ish) roots and current in action places to get involved if you may be interested in such

Do you have an idea on how many hubs are open ? Which are the most important ones ?

It's simple, there are tens of thousands of hubs (public or private) that are active on the web today ! Every day new hubs arrive, allowing people to trade any types of files. Many of these hubs are specialised either in divx movies, or in music or in games. It's really like little clubs, and net users only need to find the one which suits them best.

Do you think DC can be an good alternative to Kazaa or eMule for a beginner ?

Given that DC has a completly different architecture, a certain time is needed to adapt. Personally, I wouldn't recommend DC to a beginner, even though with a little experience DC is actually pretty easy to use. It's most important to understand how it works before rushing on it and trying to downloading just anything.

All done :gj

By the way, which issue is this in ? Is it the most recent one ?
