bug w/ WMP and more than one CDROM drive - August 19th, 2002, 02:24 PM

A couple days ago, I installed Daemon Tools on my system. The next time I try to use WMP, I get the message that digital playback is not availabe and to switch to analog. After doing some reading on the Daemon pages, I found out that this is due to a bug in WMP that pops up when more than one CDROM drive is installed on a system (including virtual drives). The FAQ said I need to put the CDROM drives in the same order they appear in the ASPI manager, but no further instruction or explainations were given. If anyone can explain the procedure or give an alternative solution, I would appreciate it.

that happened to me before - August 19th, 2002, 07:08 PM

I had the same problem before when I installed 2 burners and nero's virtual drive.

I cannot remember exactly what I did, but I think I just went to device manager to enabled the digital playback. check it out , go
system /device manager and check out your cd rom drive.

Lightbulb my suggestion - August 19th, 2002, 07:37 PM

what do u predominately use WMP to do? music of video viewing? cause thre are other players out there. I know Winamp has an add on that'll let you use it to play videos:fire other than that i'd say look aroudn for a media player that's more reliable personally i don't playa lot of videos on my computer so i use WMP the few times i do play videos.

WMP - August 19th, 2002, 08:27 PM

I don't use windows media player myself and this particular problem affects the use of the cdrom, not just the use of any particular application. In other words, using another app will not solve the problem.
As I like I said , I never even use wmp.

That did not work. :^( When I had the virtual drive installed, not only would digital playback not work, but I couldn't even stop the CD from playing once it started. I had to eject the CD to get it to stop. I then did as Rickio suggested and enabled digital playback in the device manager. Once I did that, I could get the CD to stop playing, but it was acting very sluggish and the sound quality was terrible(a lot of skipping). Then I uninstalled the virtual drive and that did not work. Then I restored the registry to a point prior to installing the drive. After that, everything worked perfectly. Both digital and analog playback work flawlessly once again. But WTF was the problem and how to fix it? I really need that virtual drive. Any suggestions? I'm at a loss. BTW, if it helps, I run Windows ME.

try iso buster - August 20th, 2002, 06:13 PM

you wanted a virtual drive to run ripped cd's right?
there are a few other apps that work for that as well and don't actually install a virtual drive.
try win iso, that may help. I have used it to view contents of a iso but not actually run a app. but I believe it will.

also there is fantomcd which also creates virtual drives.
both are shareware, but I got my copies off of p2p networks.

This is from the readme of the application winiso, looks like it may be of use to you: read number 8

WinISO(R) Version 5.3

================================================== ====================

For a list of changes in this version, see the file whatsnew.txt.
For ordering information, see the file order.txt

*** Introduction ***

WinISO is a utility to convert CD-ROM image file format(s), and
has the option to extract/edit image file directly!

WinISO runs on Windows95/98/Me/NT/2000. It can process almost all
CD-ROM image file(s) including ISO and BIN. With WinISO, you can
add/delete/rename/extract file(s) within image files. You can
convert image files to the standard ISO format, and you have the
ability to create ISO image file(s) from a CD-ROM.

Some details:
1. WinISO is the first software to edit BIN/ISO or almost all
images file(s) directly!
2. Support bootable cd perfect! You can add/save/remove/make boot
section.
3. You can convert almost all image file formats, including BIN,
and save it as a standard ISO format file.
4. You can convert standard ISO file to BIN/CUE file.
5. It Supports almost all known CD-ROM image files, including some
virtual CD-ROM container files.
6. You can Create an ISO file from CD-ROM.
7. You can select some files or directories, and then create the
ISO based on these files.
8. Ability to open an image file, display the file tree, then run
files from within the image file. This can be handy to view/run
or setup programs/files.
9. Because of its file associations, you can simply double click an
ISO file in Windows Explorer to open it.
10.Very easy to use interface, but powerful enough for the expert!
11.......

WinISO helps you to be the CDROM King!

*** Warning ***
WinISO can open and edit non-standard third-party image files such
as .CIF, .NRG, etc. but, in some cases, if the non-standard
third-party image file has been saved by WinISO, the original
application which created it might not be able to open it again. In
these cases, WinISO can open and extract it normally, no files will
lost.
If you must use the original application to open the non-standard
third-party image files, we recommend you use "Save as" to save the
non-standard third-party image file to standard ISO9660 image file,
almost all applications support it.

Enjoy it!

ashep612,

"DAEMON Tools is an advanced application for multiprotection emulation. It is further development of Generic Safedisc emulator and incorporates all its features. This program allows running Backup Copies of SafeDisc (C-Dilla), Securom or Laserlock protected games. Also included is a Virtual DVDROM drive (V386 STEALTH DVDROM) enabling you to use your CD images as if they were already burned to CD! DAEMON Tools works under Windows9x/ME/NT/2000/XP with all types of CD/DVDROM drives (IDE/SCSI) and supports nearly any CD protection.

DAEMON Tools needs a 1:1 Copy to run!!

DAEMON Tools is used to RUN GAMES, NOT TO BURN THEM!!! Means emulation must be active while you want to play a game, not while burning the copy (except for you want to use DAEMON Tools' "fastdump" feature on a safedisc protected CD).

If you want to run a copy protected application from an image mounted to a STEALTH DVDROM enabling the copy protection emulation(s) is NOT necessary!!

STEALTH DVDROM is able to run nearly every protected or unprotected CD image (Safedisc®, Securom®, Laserlock®, Lockblocks® etc.) like it was the original CD! Just do an image file using one of the supported burning programs and mount it with Daemon Manager!"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rickio,

What I wanted to do is use clonecd to create image files of my CDs, save them to the hard drive and then mount them to the virtual drives. Then, there is no more need to fumble with CDs, and you can use the image to create a backup any time you may need it. I ge tired of sorting through CDs, and puting them in and taking them out all the time. I'm not sure Win Iso can do what Daemon Tool can, but I could be wrong. I think I will give FantomCD a go. I will figure something out that will work eventually. BTW, I read where FantomCD is no longer being developed. Check this out from the FantomCD forums:

"all development has stopped on fantom cd and copystar no longer provides any support for it. the original programmer has left copystar and has started a new endeavor writing the successor to fantom cd. it will be known as 'alcohol 120%'"

And this from CDRTimes.net:

"Alcohol 120% is the CD&DVD emulation and recording software allows users to copy a visible and an invisible discs. Alcohol 120% enables users to create 31 virtual CD&DVD- ROM to play discs without needing a physical disc; enables users to copy CD&DVD to CD- R / CD-RW / DVD-R / DVD-RW / DVD-RAM / DVD+RW. Alcohol 120% combines all functions of Alcohol 52% (CD&DVD emulation software) and Alcohol 68% (CD&DVD recording software).

Feature · Support for Windows 95 / 98 / Me / NT / 2000 / XP · Create maximum 31 virtual CD&DVD-ROM drives
Alcohol 120%% allows you to create 31 virtual CD&DVD-ROM drives (maximum) in your hard disk. It is enable to run several CD&DVD programs simultaneously. · 200X CD-ROM reading speed
The reading speed of a virtual CD-ROM is 200X. This means you can play a CD from the virtual CD-ROM with 200X reading speed. · CD&DVD reading methods: normal CD&DVD reading methods and CD RAW sub- channel reading method. RAW reading method enables to emulate all CDs. · CD writing methods: Session-At-Once, Disc-At-Once, RAW Session- At-Once, RAW Session- At-Once + SUB, RAW Disc- At-Once (with full PQ/R-W sub-code support) · CD format supported: CD-DA, CD+G, CD-ROM, CD-XA, Video CD, Photo CD, Mixed Mode, Multi-session CD · DVD formats supported: DVD-ROM (Data DVD) · Support for all CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW drives currently available (ATAPI and SCSI) · Full support for IEEE-1394 (Firewire) and USB protocols · Support for Buffer-Under-Run prevention technologies including: BURN-Proof™, JustLink™, Power-Burn™, SafeBurn™, and Seamless Link (for CD&DVD recording function)"

Anybody used this yet, or know any more about it?

Hey that alcohol 120% sounds cool. I will check it out later. But just because fantomCD has stopped development doesn't mean it won't work. Just in the future you will likely want a actively developed application.
check it out.
