Hoobastank in support of burned CDs? - August 13th, 2002, 09:35 PM

I was watching their video for Crawling in the Dark, and happened to noticed at one point a girl puts a burned (yes, burned) Hoobastank CD into the media player in the car. Their label, Island Records, is a rock-only company, so it might make some sense. Besides the fact that the members are pretty young themselves, so are more likely to support downloading.

Still, the fact that they support BURNED cds is something. I didn't like Hoobastank, but now I have more respect for them.

Was Hoobastank proving a point when they did this? If they were then more bands will probly start doing this.

By contrast, in the Red Hot Chili Peppers' vid for By The Way, the taxi driver pops in a "store" cd and two band members drive around in a hummer. Hmmm.

While im not saying that artist supporting burned cd copys and p2p are bad i do have a possible reason for this.

Artists usually release thier first video for a new album before its actual release, sometimes a month before. The final cd label may not have been done at the time of the video filming since this is thier first video. They needed something, so they just took a "burned" cd and used it in the video.

I have no idea if this is true, but its probably what happened.

Hmm very interesting... it's possible. I'll have to do some 'investigating' on the subject. I'll report back when I've got some info. :sw

UPDATE: "After returning from the Incubus tour and taking a side route with Sum41, Hoobastank put the finishing touches on the record and Island set a release date for November 20, 2001. They headed to Downtown Los Angeles on October 23-24 to shoot the video for "Crawling In The Dark", which allowed the fans to make appearances in the video."

So jabba, you're right. They shot the video before the album release. Whether or not there were demo CDs available at the time of the shoot, who knows, but it was probably easier for them to burn the CD.

Well, there you have it. Case Closed.:hole
