I was thinking "when is a moderator going to step in and stop these personal attacks", it never happened. Now I see why, you are the moderaters. I'm gobsmacked.

Anyway a question if I may, what version of BearShare were you arguing about?

Which attacks? Sephiroth and me aren´t good friends this is no secret, but I think not that he attacked me... he is only unfriendly like I am - did I mention that we aren´t friends? This is a VERY long story...

Btw we aren´t the only mods here, if anybody of the other mods think we went over the line he can edit it...

We were talking about the version 4.0 with the security options!

Thanks for clearing that up. So just for information, I operate as a Shareaza ultrapeer, I get loads of connections from BearShare v4 so I assume that not many users take advantage of the blocking feature.

Which kinds or connections? I believe mostly incoming...

The problem is there are several settings for this "security feature".

You can choose that bearshare blocks all icoming (non bearshare) connections but is able to connect to other nodes... this means you will sure find many bearshare uploads but I guess only a few downloads.

If you choose secure connections for hosts it doesnt connect to non-secured nor accept incoming it works in both directions and not just incoming..

Also if you have the secure channel for uploads i believe other servents wouldnt be able to understand it or where it came from so it shouldnt be displayed by servents that doesnt support it.. As far as i know if your using a non-bearshare program and get a bearshare result you should be able to download from it..

Its turned off by default so many users dont use it..

As for the thread i dont see where there are personal attacks and although i dont agree with many of morgwens views on gnutella and vice versa.. That is all see of it, my personal feelings has nothing to do with anything because i simply dont care.. Why should get i angry for something that someone ill never know or meet says? I personally dont know nor really care to know so i think it would be foolish to make personal judgements? However how they present themselves and their actions online IMHO is fair game because it doesnt neccessaryly mean thats how they are in real life..

JJJecj71 posted a screenshot on bearshare.net (I wanted to post the link but I can´t reach the site at the moment).

This screenshot shows exatly which settings are possible and which not. there is an option to block incoming non bearshare traffic and you can choose if you want to download from all nodes or ONLY bearshare nodes.

I will post the link tomorrow.

Of course its possible...

When you choose to download from all nodes there is no problem, if you choose to download from ONLY bearshare nodes the client requests some encryted data and knows if this is a bearshare node or not... so it is of course possible that you can download from all clients while blocking all non-bearshare traffic!

Here are the setting from 4.0.2 beta 17. Looks to be what Sephiroth explined, note he was refferring to the hosts, you can choose wither or for uploads and downloads.

this was a weekly war of words. Kind of the Morgwen and Sephiroth Show. Mostly these guys fought like jr. High School girls but I don't want to go to deep or all of my posts will disappear. You can leech with other gnutella programs by turning off sharing altogether.. Which i consider someone who turns just uploads on is not that much different than someone who turns it off altogether because its rare that they would get a upload anyways..
