System requirements for Freenet - October 19th, 2003, 12:40 PM

Hey all. I was wondering what kind of system requirements you need to run Freenet...from people who have used it. The sourceforge website recommends LOTS of ram and LOTS of processor speed, neither of which I have. However I know people online who say you don't really need much ram or processor speed.

It's not really important, but I would like to run Freenet and help get the network more useable (even on my crappy p2 266 :D).

Freenet recommend a minimum: 400MHz Pentium 2, with at least 192MB of RAM.

I have run it on 233MHz with 80MB but it interrupts what I'm doing and you have to dedicate your machine to it when it is downloading.

If you are running as a primary node then it reallys needs a 400MHz machine. It rarely drops below 80% cpu usage on a 400MHz machine.

If you are secondary, usually because you havn't got port forwarding set up through your router, then you can leech off the network with a slower machine.

Yes, but remember that if you run your node as secondary (transient), you don't have plausible deniability (if your node requested a file, it was you who requested it).
