DULLES, Va. -(Dow Jones)- AOL Time Warner Inc.'s (AOL) American Online will provide Google's search engine technology and targeted paid listings on its AOL brands.

The companies aren't disclosing the financial terms, an AOL spokesman said.

In a press release Wednesday, interactive service company America Online said Google's search technology will start powering the search areas of AOL, CompuServe, AOL.com and Netscape this summer.

The marketing agreement also will let Google provide AOL and CompuServe members, and users of AOL.com and Netscape its targeted paid listing product. The paid listings will be available on the AOL service and AOL.com immediately. They will launch on Netscape and CompuServe during the next several weeks.

Google is not merging with AOL. AOL is going to start using Google for it's searches instead of running their own servers for this. Simply a matter of outsourcing, most likely an attempt to save $$$.
Now they can shut down a bunch of servers and layoff the people involved...

Question May 1st, 2002, 11:35 AM

What concerns me is what is this going to do for my searches when all the AOL users start running searches...

Can they handle the influx of new users? Although maybe more of them will stay with their "Keyword" AOL searches and not actually venture out on the Internet...

The only people who can bring Google down is Google themselves, and they'd have to pull off something really stupid in order to screw themselves over. They'll probably just take the money and update their servers, or put it towards some of their other side projects: news.google.com & answers.google.com

I intend to live forever. So far so good.

Since its inception almost 30 years ago, the internet has been transformed from a primitive device for sharing thoughts and ideas, into a massive network where people pay to connect and read advertisements they don't want, while calling each other "asshats".

Have you seen the AOL Time Warner stock recently, it's taken a nose dive!!! Merging with AOL's overinflated stock was about the worst mistake Time and Warner made. Even Time Magazine has a couple articles about how the stock had plummtted, (it was kind of funny to see that article in Time Magazine though hehehehe)
