Hey guys.
Hotline was my first exposure to online file trading ("way back" in 1997 or so). I remember getting an email from a friend in which he was so enthusiastic..."YOU CAN DOWNLOAD GAMES...FOR **FREE** OMG!" ;) Basically Hotline is a group of servers, and each "server" is usually just someone's home PC who is running a Hotline server program. For servers which require no login/pass or special account, you are free to download whatever the person is hosting...or upload anything to the person's computer so other people can download as well. So in this sense Hotline is really nothing more than a GUI for a bunch of private FTP servers. Hotline is still popular with Mac users (for some reason) but overall it just SUCKS. Why? About 95% of the servers these days require a login/pass which you can only get by downloading adware (usually XXX related) or signing yourself up to XXX mailing lists, and so on. It's really annoying. You will find the odd average person who is hosting a server without any such requirements (and to whom you can download or upload freely) but such people are rare, and even if you do find such a person it's likely that many people are downloading from him at the same time...which means his bandwidth is being eaten up and downloads will be really slow. All in all, stay away from Hotline. It will always have an interesting place in file sharing history, but by today's standards it's obsolete and not worth your time. ~RecalcitrantX |

Hotline is like DC++ except there are no sharing requirements. Users running the hotline client can log onto hotline servers and download anime, warez, and porn. Unfortunately many hotline servers require a password and username to log in. In some cases the admin for the hotline server will allow you to browse their files, but you can't download. You have to upload a certain amount of files and the admin will email you a password and user name to download files from the server. This policy of "upload to download" pretty much killed the hotline community. There are very few free hotline servers left in the community. If you go to Tracker-Tracker to see the hotline servers still running. But with the newer P2P software like Kazaa or Winmx, the hotline community is somewhat dying. There are still good stuff on the hotline servers, but the queues can be long. One word of warning, the new hotline client 1.9 has spyware in it. Use hotline client 1.85 if you want to try out hotline. |

Hotline is not p2p as the only one sharing files is the person who runs the server. People who connect to a server have access to files on that server, but none of their files are shared. Hotline is much more like FTP with additional features such as newsgroups and instant messaging. By the way, as Jelsoft mentioned the new 1.9 client comes with spy/adware - Cydoor to be exact. Just replace cd_clint.dll with the dummy one from Kazaa Lite. Hotline will work and you get rid of the banner ads.

I wrote a rather lengthy reply to this, which I have posted here:
http://www.zeropaid.com/bbs/showthread.php?p=182839 I discuss Hotline, as well as a new app very much like it called KDX, which unlike Hotline, is still under development. |

There could be a situation where you upload a lot of files and then ask for a username and password to download the files. The admin can just ignore you. The admin will have new material and you will have downloaded nothing. |

One has to learn the proper protocol for doing 'business' in a client/server environment. You always talk to the admin first before uploading.

I have never had an admin do such a thing on Hotline back in the days, or currently on KDX. BUT one way to screw yourself over is to just start uploading assuming the admin will give you an account. He or she may be away for a long period of time, not like what you uploaded, or he or she may already have it. Talk with the admin ~ if it looks like a good server, the admin definitely isn't someone who 'cheats' like that. For a server to have any decent content, it takes time and a good user base to upload material. If you go to a server with no users connected and a few low quality videos they found on Kazaa, yes, you may get screwed, but you should have had better judgement. |
