heres the deal on mp3 viruses--if you play mp3s on realone or wmp, the mp3 can contain links to webpages--these webpages can sock you with a hostile script etc..
the mp3 doesn't have the virus, only a link--if you use winamp, there is no problem at all article here <http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105-861995.html> |

from what i understand of the subject, there are no "mp3 viruses" (as in opening a certain mp3 will give you a virus every single time with every single player), there are just flaws in the player. and i quote from zdnet,
"A bug in the code of WinAmp 2.79 allows a specially formed data tag in an MP3 file to cause a buffer overrun in the application, which could be exploited to run any piece of code the attacker wishes" http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1105-895174.html |

Be careful in Windows for files that have more than one extension, thats the number one trick of viruses is most people have an option turned off in Windows Explorer to hide extensions. So, when you get a file thats song.mp3 - its actually song.mp3.vbs or song.mp3.exe and you don't see the last part of it, because you have that feature turned off. To turn it on, do this:
Open Windows Explorer, and go to Tools and Folder Options, go to the View tab, and in the radio buttons uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types" Also, AnalogX makes a program called Script Defender that blocks out bad file types that can be potential viruses. You can download it here: http://www.analogx.com/contents/down...em/sdefend.htm Secondly, GET A VIRUS SCANNER If you're too cheap to buy one, you can download AVG for free at http://www.grisoft.com/ Free updates too! |
