old school rap

i got a question for all of ya 80's people, did you like the rap music they had back then? i personally think it is better than the rap thats out today, im kind of into the old school stuff, like beastie boys, grand master flash, mc hammer (gotta love the pants lol), mantronix, and all the other old school artists.

if you did like the old school rap, which artists were your favorite?

Yes, back then rap was about having fun. it wasn't violent, it wasn't about "bitches, and ho's", murder, fucking, wanting to tap "dat ass" It wasn't brainless idiocy that it has become now.

It was creative, they mixed styles of music, it had a melody (well, more so then it does today anyway)

and i agree with psi about the rap idealogy
back then rap wasnt about guns violence etc

well from my experience anyways all i have to say that some of the best old school rappers come from out east. *cough* nyc.
but i am sure there are other states they came from too.

rap to me was about hearing music, beats etc and not hearing about mofo*motherfuckers* getting shot up. worse even yes check a lyrical sentence of a basic 2000 rap thing.

i mean i still listen to rap but it has to be according to how i feel about the song etc. if it has flavor *when i say flavor it has taste it has a good beat, instrumental etc*.

basically i like rap music that u can dance to and has some good lyrics but to be honest some rap i like can be more or less with cursing reality etc.
hands down i like tupac *and * eminem* and others.
yeah i surely contradicted myself by saying that the rap i remember or listen to shouldnt contain lyrics or violence but i go with the flow of the music or the tempo etc.

so sure i am a hypocrit and i admit it but to me if the music brings a good spirit to me, calms me down or makes me mellow then i have no problem with it. and being that this topic is about old school rap i will have to say yeah i loved it.

does anyone here remember how much a rap record (not a cd) cost back in the 80's? i am a big fan of mantronix, he can make some funky beats, and good lyrics with his songs, check out bassline, and fresh is the word. kurtis blow also is a good early rap artist, my favorite song he did has to be the breaks.

i do agree that rap music today has gotten to commercial, and all it is about is bitches, ho's, pimpin, etc like what was said above, it be cool to see a new artist come along and make old school sounding rap music like it was in the 80s.

Hip-Hop, not rap, had it's Golden Era 86-87 but I'd like to think all of the late eighties was, and still is the best example of this genre of music. Forget the shit that's in the charts right now, it's all plastic and fake.

Big Daddy Kane and the rest of the Juice Crew (Check out The Symphony), BDP aka KRS-ONE (not sure what the rest did). Eric B & Rakim, Public Enemy, L.L Cool J, Beastie Boys, Ultra Magnetic M.C's (particually Kool Keith), Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, Flavor Unit.

And the early 90's was good too.

Jesus, how the hell could I forget Run-DMC?! Better to get the greatest hits album though.

And if you want a wicked track by a DJ from my neck of the woods, try DJ Mink - Hey, Hey, Can you relate. Best UK rap record ever made in my opinion, better than Derek B. And check out Hijack, London Possee, MC Duke and Demon Boyz.

EDIT: I should say there's a whole shit load of mixes of that track (DJ Mink), the original 'Hard Rap' version is the best.

Kind of a misconception. Older Rap DID include lyrics about guns, drugs, money, hoes. But, at the time it was used in a story telling context, not as the meat and potatoes of an album. Rap and/or Hip-Hop has only went to shit in the mainstream. Most of the music people judge it by is like the Nickelback equivelant of Rap. Cookie cutter shit that is pumped out there because it sells. Check out artists like Zion-I, Immortal Technique, and Aesop Rock for actual talent.
