What you got against Metallica? - June 30th, 2003, 05:33 AM

Hey all,

I was wondering... why do u guys all hate Metallica and the new album so much.
I saw em live on Rock Werchter 2003 in Belgium two days ago, and all I can say is... SWEET.
They absolutely know how to handle those instruments and put on a show. I haven't heard the new album on cd yet, but it kicked ass live. And so did the old songs.

Ok, they are against filesharing and stuff... but that doesn't make them a less good band...
I think most bands deep down are against filesharing, but they just don't want to admit it, because they are afraid of losing fans!

Personally, nothing. But as a band they have had better days. Songs like "The Unforgiven" were masterpieces. The more recent material just does not measure up. Just my opinion, everybody likes different things.:wings

Fuck Metallica, They used to be my favorite band, Their new album is total crap. sounds like Lars traded in his drum kit for garbage can lids. They are also some of the main people that want to sue your ass for file-sharing. Since the Load album Metallica's music has taken a slide down the toilet, I prefer to listen to Overkill, they've been kicking around since the same time as Metallica and have stuck to putting out powerful music that still has the Overkill signiture. At least they never dabbled with mascara.

Their sound has changed so much from when they first started out... I think the sound that made them who they are is gone, and now it's like.... a different band.

I like Orion though. They DO have a few songs I enjoy.

hey, i love Metallica...but their earlier stuff.
come on....this "new" sound just sucks.
they tried something different and it failed, in my opinion.
to change your sound just to fit the recent change in musical popularity is just plain wrong.

as for their politics...well they proved to me that they r hypocrites.
i'm sure they thought the publicity of the whole "Napster" thing would help them as well as show their greed and now all of a sudden, after all the bullshit, they somehow changed their tune???
pah-lease.
if in the future they put out something worthy, i will listen and enjoy, politics aside.
but they r just sucking "all" around.

I've liked all their albums up until now, and the new one is starting to grow on me. I was watching a recording of them playing at the Rock AM Ring festival in Germany recently on MTV2, and they are still great live. James simply puts more effort into the singing when he's live nowadays.

As to them sucking on Load, I have to disagree. It's probably my favourite album of theirs, although I have to admit I love all of them!

The "new" sound doesn't suit them though. The comment about Lars switiching to playing binlids is very true. There's just no feeling in the rhythm any more.

Yeah, they are better live than on cd.
The live version of their new song 'frantic' was fantastic, while the album version is just ok.

And about them changing their style: You have to change your style once in a while. If you don't, you get stuck in the same cycle of songs, and it becomes hard to find good songs that differ from the old ones enough.

There are a lot of bands who change their style once in every while. Radiohead for example. They started out as a hard-rock band, and now they make very quiet songs... There will allways be fans who are disapointed about these changes, but they will also get new fans...

Yeah, I particularly agree about 'Frantic'. Hetfield really got into it and amazingly Kirk joined in with the singing!

I know what you mean about style-changing. I think the problem is that they have become slightly Nu-Metal-ish, thus looking as though they are only going with current popularity.

All bands inevitably change their styles. What bothers me about Metallica is that their style change stemmed not from organic growth; rather, they changed their sound in an obvious attempt to make themselves more amenable to radio airplay and mass-market appeal.

There's no better example of this than St. Anger. It's obviously done with a nod towrds the current wave of nu-metal, specifically SOAD. That doesn't mean all the songs are bad; I actually thought St. Anger was allright. But the fact remains that they are trying first and foremost to stay on the radio instead of just being Mettalica, damnit!

That's exactly how I feel. And, now I think about it, their new similarity to SOAD is very obvious! The "pounding" riffs going into soft, rhythmic, vocal parts.
