Bittorrent restarting computer - June 22nd, 2003, 01:24 PM

I've noticed recently that when I download files with Bittorrent for even a minute, it makes my computer do a hard restart....ouch, that's a sickening sound. Anyone else had problems?

that's odd, what kind of system do you have? (how big is the powersupply etc)

have you done anything inbetween the time it didn't do this, and the time it did?

LMAO - June 22nd, 2003, 02:52 PM

Ive been wondering how long it would take . . . .

And soon . . . I will conquer with my clone army

Anyhoo . . . . . if your W2000 or XP restarts your PC,

Right Click My Computer > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings.

Deselect the Automatically Restart option.

Also, when you determine what the offending program is., you may want to uninstall it, and then REinstall using the Program Compatability Wizard. Browse to the Setup .exe file, and chose W2000 or W98 compatability.

cheers

Whoa, I thought that was Krell too.

Yes, I of course first thought my power supply was dying, the fan was burnt out and it was overheating or just a short or something. But after my brother watched Popeye episodes on it for hours while I was gone, and my mom played Bubblet all day today, I thought it might have been fixed. Then I turned on Bittorrent and of course that's a pretty disk intensive program and BAM, about 30 seconds into it, the comp restarted.

I have the P4 power supply, I forget the specs, but I remember thinking it was pretty beefy. About a year ago, I had the same problems, the fan on the power supply would turn off spiratically because it was burned out no surprise since this thing stays on all the time. From what I can see, I don't think this is the case this time though.

I'm using the original bittorrent client and I haven't had any problems until recently. I turned off the automatic restart now, so let's hope there aren't any further problems.

Edit 1: Oh, I guess I should mention I added a second hard drive a few weeks ago, so that might be sucking too much power when the disks really start winding up like they do. Think so?

Edit 2: Ok, I just started some torrents downloading again and this time instead of restarting automatically, it sent me to a blue screen that said Windows had an error and needed to dump the physical memory and just sat there until I turned it off and then back on. It gave me the error "DRIVER_IRQL_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

Then said it has to dump physical memory
Dump complete

Edit 3: I have 384MB of RDRAM and I have tweaked the settings in TweakXP so that it puts more priorities to applications rather than background programs, and I also did something with the pagefile, I "enabled core performance" do you think that could be causing this?

This is exactly what I wanted to happen.

By deselecting Automatically Restart, you unmasked what the culprit is. The first thing I want to hammer in is, that your hardware, ALL of it, has drivers that need some memory space, and attention from the CPU thru IRQ's . . . thats what they're for.

You need functional drivers for everything, from your IDE bus . . the AGP bus . . USB . . Printers . . you name it. When a device cant get that allocated space due to a bottleneck, you can get that blue screen error.

With the addition of the new hard drive, its "possible" that you have a problem with your HD Controller . . . you may have requests from the Secondary that you did not previously have.

Since you did not note the REST of the error msg, then it is speculation as to what hardware it may be. So . . . my opinion is, that you need to recreate the error, crash it again. Then, on that blue screen, you write down by hand the EXACT msg. There's your clues.

Also, I would like for you to send me your AIDA32 REPORT , Theinfamousone.MHTML, and the Event Logs for your Applications and System. Look under Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Click ea and Save As > Theinfamousone-App.evt or Theinfamousone-sysevent.

These three will tell me enough about your system to make en educated guess on whats wrong with your system, conflicts, etc.

Also, and this is for everyone, when you make changes, do them slowly. Only make one change at a time, and write them down.

Edit 3: I have 384MB of RDRAM and I have tweaked the settings in TweakXP so that it puts more priorities to applications rather than background programs, and I also did something with the pagefile, I "enabled core performance" do you think that could be causing this?

Its possible, and any time you make these core changes you can build in new problems.

Alright - June 26th, 2003, 03:49 AM

I'll get the rest of the error message. It wasn't a blue screen of death as you would think of.

Here's the events. Have fun, I bet there's been more errors on my comp in the last week than you've had on all of yours put together in the last year.

First impressions:

IRQ 09 Shared Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter(LNE100TX v4)
IRQ 09 Shared Creative SB Live! Series (WDM)
IRQ 09 Shared Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2444
IRQ 09 Shared Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System

Printer Name HP DeskJet 950C/952C/959C
Printer Port USB001

So . . . . things are a little crowded in the IRQ 9 dept.

Moving right along . . I see that you have that same shitty Samsung 64Mb Rambus that Intel whored of on everyone back when they first pushed P4. You have 2 sticks of it. YOU ALSO have 2 sticks of Kingston 128Mb RAMBUS.

The Samsung is 16 Bit width, and the Kingston is 18 Bit width. Does this really matter? Depends on who you ask. If you ask ME, yes , and heres why.

16 Bit memory is traditionally non ECC, no error correction. 18 Bit memory is for the error correction. But dont just take my word for it
http://support.intel.com/support/pro...m4/rimmtip.htm

This is your onboard memory controller specs.

Memory Controller Properties:
Error Detection Method 32-bit ECC
Error Correction Single-bit
Supported Memory Interleave 1-Way
Current Memory Interleave 1-Way
Supported Memory Speeds 50ns
Supported Memory Types ECC
Supported Memory Voltages 3.3V
Maximum Memory Module Size 512 MB
Memory Slots 4

Consider taking the Samsung out. Your memory hub* cant make up it's mind if its ECC or NON ECC. And, if Gateway did it, let me know, I love to rip them new assholes. I really really do.

* The Intel® 82850 Memory Controller Hub (MCH) integrates dual Rambus* channels, providing a processor-to-memory bandwidth up to 3.2 GB/second.

Common Memory Features:

Up to (4) 2.5V, 184-pin RDRAM* interface memory modules (RIMM*)
Single or Double-sided RIMM* configurations
Serial Presence Detect (SPD) memory only
Non-ECC is 16-bit, and ECC is 18-bit memory

Either will do either mode depending on what you have the BIOS set for, but just dont mix.

Well . . . that's all for now . . . . I will look things over when I am coherant.

I think you missed the Event logs. You had yoinked the Aida report almost as soon as I posted it though. And here is the error report. Now, I'll tell you everything that I know. I haven't used Bittorrent for a couple days (surprised how much I missed it, how did I ever get along without it), and I haven't had any problems.

Then I started up Bittorrent just a while ago and bam, very strange. I have used all of the clients except Shareaza and they've all had the exact same problem. About 3 or 4 minutes of downloading torrents will give this error message:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your system.

DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps.

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you made need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software.

Disable BIOS memory options suchs as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode...(you know the drill)

Unplug your printer, and any other un-needed peripherals.

Anything USB thats not needed, unplug it.

I think we have established that it is not a particular application, but the sudden sucking up the memory of the app that crashes you. I believe that you get a bottleneck in moving a large amount of data thru RAM. When you do this, you exceed the wait state tolernces and BAM no memory for your devices.

Key words DRIVER and IRQ.

My printer is the only thing I have that's USB.

Would it help to get more RAM?

Well, like you said, IRQ 9 is a little crowded, how can I go about spreading them out a little more?

As for the RAM bit, I bought that a couple years ago. Gateway gave me the Samsung and I put in the Kingston. I didn't know there was any kinds of problems with mixing RAM, and it's been working fine for the last couple of years, but I wouldn't mind taking out the two 64MB 16 bit sticks and putting in some 18 bit 512MB sticks from Kingston. Is it possible to put in the newer RDRAM like PC 1100 or whatever they've got or do I have to stay with PC800?

HEY DONT MAKE FUN OF GATEWAY!! Hehe, just kidding, actually I can't complain, they've happily replaced close to a thousand dollars of parts and peripherals (PSU, Monitor, keyboard, etc.) that I've worn out in the last couple years and replaced them with newer models for free including shipping. I've got a few more things going, like my monitor is about to blow a tube I think, and I've got another year of Warranty, it's like a warm blanket. Anything that goes wrong is their fault, hehe.
