Mandrake Boot Problems - May 20th, 2003, 05:33 PM

I am a recent convert from windows, but I have been having many problems with Mandrake 9.1. First, I had problems with my winmodem (piece of crap!) which was a big pain in the ass. Then my storage partition (~80% of my HD) said that I couldn't read or write to it because of permissions. Now, Mandrake has stopped booting to the GUI. Now these problems arn't enough to make me want to go back to Windows, but they are enough to annoy me A LOT. I have solved all but the booting by various methods, but I cannot for the life of me, find out how to get back to the GUI. Can anyone help me start it back up and tell me how to keep it from happening again? If you have time, I could also use a summary of the concepts behind permissions and groups. Thanks so much to anyone who helps.

If it boots directly to command line, try typing "startx".
If you are using KDE, try typing "kde" in case "startx" doesn't work.

I'm not sure if it that's the only problem, but the option go boot to GUI can be disabled or enabled.

If you insert the cd-rom while you boot and type-in rescue at the command, i think it gives you an option to re-load the bootloder, and from there i think you can choose to have it boot to the GUI.
