Lightbulb Seedbox tips - June 30th, 2007, 08:04 AM

Seedbox : a server with large upload capacity doing the seeding for you, usually a dedicated server.

Hi!

How do you manage your seedbox ? Any tips to simplify usage ?

Here's my setup (warning, linux experience needed) :

I got a dedicated box with a 250Gb hard disk and a 100mbps unmetered bandwidth.
I use GNU/Linux Debian-etch on it. Most of the action is done through ssh with screen.
I use a ~/downloads/tracker-name/files.torrent organization layout on the hard disk.
I use w3m to log onto trackers and download .torrent files directly in each tracker's directory.
I then use launch a rtorrent for each tracker. I edited the ~/.rtorrent.rc file to save session data in ./session/, that is ~/downloads/tracker-name/session/ (manually created). I load the .torrent from there. You might want to use the watch feature to start .torrent files automatically. I don't use this feature because it prevents me from selectively choosing files to download and seed before starting.

Some other random tips :
I use vnc, xfce (lighter) and firefox with a "reload every..." addon for trackers that time-out your session.
I use symlinks to cross-seed, e.g. : symlinking ~/downloads/bitsoup/bleh/ to ~/downloads/torrentleech/bleh/ to seed on bitsoup a torrent I got on torrentleech.
To pass under the radar, I don't try to make my ratio explode. I keep the upload rate at twice the average download speed of my DSL line (where the files end up) to get a reasonable 2:1 ratio and my monthly traffic unsuspicious.

I normally have a company manage it for me :P As for 50 a month, You get a unmetered 100mb internet connection. But i suggest that you should monitor the outgoing connections, lock down ALL services that are not used and monitor what are like mad. Why, because if its connected to the internet 24/7, nasties might try to get in.

QFE. I don't run a seedbox, but if someone see's an open 100mbit/sec server running, they might try to hijack it and use it as an IRC bot/warez exchange server etc.

My current setup stats (like anyone cares...):

ASUS A8N32-SLI Motherboard
AMD 4400+ Dual-Core CPU
Windows Vista (Ultimate 32bit)

EVGA GeForce 7950 GTX 512 MB
Creative X-FI Fatal1ty XtremeGamer

Also sporting a black MacBook

packages? maybe a pre-installed torrentflux setup of some sort?

leasetorrent.com
preinstalled torrentflux starting at 3Euro/month but if you're anything like me, all the add-ons will cost you 10-20x that amount. I've been looking at tzulo as an alternative because it's about 35USD for what I want but I like the way leasetorrent has it all set up for you.

safest way to pull data from the seedbox... - December 29th, 2007, 12:41 AM

If a person was trying to be REALLY cautious.. what would be the best way
to get my data from the seedbox/colocated box. In my case, the entire
point of the box is to keep my ratios high but do it in a Safe manner.
in this case, using an out of country server.. so, that keeps my IP
address out of the mix (at least publicly) and then that leaves
me with getting this data from the out of country server....
I know that I can FTP it.. but, is there any way that i can encrypt
that ftp connection? or run some comman that would zip/encrypt the
file on the remote server before pulling it down??

thanks!:icon_prof

I dont think it is permitted for me to post a link to a host that I recommend but I know who i would recommend if I could.

dentoo.info

read these rewievs and decide for yourself...

Provider:MrSeedBox
OS:Linux
HarDrive Space:60GB,with max of 6 active torrents
Type:shared with 8 other people,site says 7,dir said 8
Speed:supposed to be 200mbit download and 100mbit upload,max I saw was '12mbit,down+10mbit up'.Hung round 800KB\s most of the time.
Note:Absolute waste of money on entering the GUI,the server load was always above 7.00 and upload speed always above 80mbit used
Recommendation:You can get alot better for the money you spend see below, service was poor and speed was aweful..

Provider:wix.com/GRAINCUBE
OS:Linux
HarDrive:60GB,with 10 active torrents
Type:Shared with 3 other users
Speed:100mbit,fastest ive seen was-52mbit down and 42mbit up,norm hangs round 10-15mbit both ways
Note:These arent very good hosts,I had to pm them to get their connections to show, they didnt know how to fix it so I had to tell them the command todo so!Speed is really bad.
Recommendation:looked ok at first then a day or so later service deterioted and speed sloweed down, server load is always over 25.00 even with the upload/download speed at not over 20mbit and then you still get crap speed..

Provider:Santrex
OS:Linux
HarDrive:50GB,with 6actives,web page says unlimited{fair usage},it stops at 6.
Type:[i]Shared but unknown with how many
Speed:100mbit,max download 22mbit,max upload 7mbit.Hung roung these figures most of the time.
Note:I was disappointed with Santrex,I would of thought they would deliver a good service, not likely
Recommendation:These are another bad host.they ignore your support tickets by answering with something totally unrelated to what you asked.Poor for a long time host.

Provider:seedbox.cc
OS:Linux
HarDrive:60GB,with 30 torrents.Theyve got a x2 drive space special on at the moment.
Type:Shared but unknown with how many
Speed:1GBiT,max download- 150mbit-170mbit,max upload- 70mbit.Hung round d/l-12mbit,u/l-155KB\s
Note:I was so disappointed with the upload speed,it was very poor. You also use a transmission gui that kept timing out and wouldnt connect for hours most of the time
Recommendation:[i]This was the worst of the crop, really poor speed and again customer service was very poor with NO,emails answered at all.

Provider:WTBOX
OS:Linux
HarDrive:100GB,Unlimited torrents.
Type:Shared,with 4-5 users
Speed:1GBiT,max download speed I saw was 600MB\s and upload was,70MBiT.The speed didnt last forever and deterioated very fast to 10/10mbit
Note:I kept getting timeouts and memory errors,WTBOX then refunded my money.
Recommendation:OK if u dont use the seedbox much, anything more than 3 active torrents and if they are fast which downloading from here is you will soon get capped as I did.

Provider:Dentoo
OS:Linux
HarDrive:45GB,with 6 active torrents
Type:Shared but with unknown ammount
Speed:100MBiT,max download- 100MBiT,max upload- 90MBiT.The speed was always on these numbers and never saw crap speed very good.
Note:I was very impressed with Dentoo, the speed was what u were paying for and the QOS was spot on,emails would be answered within a hour.
Recommendation:I recommend Dentoo, the service was a relief, the speed was blazing.
