This depends on a number of things.

First is, do you have another computer or more networked ?

Second is, do you have XP Home or Pro?

Do you have a printer attached?

I can make decisions based on that criteria, and so can you.

I know you are aware of blackvipers site, and I will continue to point people there, as I am way too lazy to duplicate that work. I do plan on asking him for a link permission tho.

MSCONFIG is def the safest way to disable Services that arent needed, but theres absolutely nothing mysterious or dangerous about using the Administrative Tools > Services either.

Great, then leave the Spooler Service, try setting it to manual.

Upon a reboot, Launch the Administrative Tools > Services.

Arrange the items by Startup Type, and put the Automatic ones at the top.

Double Click an item, then STOP the Service you dont need, and set it to Disabled.

Sort thru these first. Its easier to do it this way, than with MSCONFIG.

Stuff like TIME, Auto Update, dont need..

Computer Browser, not

Just go thru the list, and again, compare to Blackvipers site. You cant mess this up, as anything that you may disable, you can reenable again!

This will take you all of 15 Minutes, then reboot. Launch Task Manager, examine the number of services still listed as running, this is not ALL of them, but you get the idea.

Instead of a list of 38 like you do now, it should be around 14 - 16.

If youre absolutely not sure, write it down, post it,

cheers

Well, he has reg settings now, so all you have to do is download a 2KB file and double click it, it saves a lot of time and agony. I just used the safe tweaks because I don't feel like tweaking my comp every 5 minutes when I switch between watching videos, playing games, burning DVDs or whatever else he's got specialized settings for.

I tried the super tweak, and it pretty much made my computer fall apart. When he says make sure you get the defaults before doing the supertweak, he's not kidding!

If you ever organize your computer links thread, that has to be near the top of the list, I can't count how many times I've recommended it

Although I agree, we should ask him, we're sending him a lot of traffic, I doubt he's gonna care

One that ALL of you can dissable, is the messenger service, its what some people call "strange popups", there really is no security risk leaving it on, but its useless to a home user (and most buisness users), and it just takes up resources (along with possibly letting popups get onto your computer

(This is NOT MSN messenger, or anything you can easily access, so don't worry)

One other quick thing, you can download an html version of his site, so if you are stranded without internet because you dissabled it, you can check what you need offline and get back on, its also helpful if you're on dialup and don't want to sit online that long

Actually the link I used IS his approved link.

Not only download the pages, but print them out, make a binder.
