No offense, but we have this thread like every two weeks . . . it's old already.

Not as old as ESV, but close.

I was using it about 6 months before it was in stores, and haven't switched since then, its the most stable and competent OS I have ever used

Adding hardware is a snap, hard drives are even plug and play, you can boot windows, do other stuff, and automaticly in the background it finds the drive, installs the drivers, and sets it up for you, you don't have to click anything (the same goes for almost all hardware)

You just need to do some tweaking, through dissabling unneeded services you can save 30-50meg of memory on average, a bunch of hard drive space, a bunch of processor time, and it can be so much more secure

On security, they actually made it secure! (somewhat), security in 98/me was a JOKE, now you have to have some talent to hack into xp, especially on a network

XP is great if you have a decent computer, use modern software, and have little to moderate knowledge of an OS

Simply put, it kicks ass

Best OS I've ever used, mind you that's not hard compared to Windows 3.1, 3.11, 95, NT4, 98, 98SE and ME. Only 2000 has given it "a good run for it's money". Unless you count RiscOS of course......................ah.......those were the days.....................

I like it. It works for what I need it for at the momemt. But I like .Net server better for sever platforms. But for Home use its great.

Here's a better question, why is 2000 better than XP? Eh? If your computer was made before the dinosaurs went extinct (the last 2.5 years or so) you're not going to notice much performance differences. I, like Phalkon (although I was afraid to admit it) have been running the same version of XP since loooong before it was in stores, it was a sigh of relief when I was using ME and I was lucky if I could get my then brand new P4 to open notepad without crashing.

I plug and play ALL THE TIME, so it's probably saved me days of setting up hardware as I would have had to do in 2000.

Also, it has msconfig, which I use almost daily, and I can set processing priority. Anyone ever messed with that? I love that! It allows me to encode a movie, and play Starcraft at the same time, otherwise I wouldn't have any power availabe and I'd get about 3 fps.

i hate winxp bc of the bloatware and the huge number of mis-integrated features.

integrated cd- burning, anyone?

i ALWAYS get coasters. or what about the wmp that you hafta pay $10 before you can rip an mp3?

windows messenger? err, no... msn messenger sucks. i have 10 people on that list, compared to 150 on aol.

i think microsoft in general is spreading itself so thin, that it just can't make any real innvoations.

used several linux distros as well
(RH8 & knoppix)

integrated CD burning isnt that bad, i used it for a while and had good results. It is really just roxio easy cd creator which isnt bad at all (unless you are dumb enough to try to install it on XP).
Besides, even if you dont like this feature you can easily disable it and use which ever app you prefer, i dont see the issue here.

WMP is the same, since i formatted a couple of months back i havent used WMP once. There is simply no need.

Having 10 friends on MSN and 150 on AOL is pretty irrelevant when judging the pros and cons of XP as an OS.

I used Windows XP (Home Edition) for about a year because I was forced to (it came preloaded) and although it had some neat features, I was unhappy with it's overall performance. I even turned off all the animated shit, because it just made it run slower and looked like MSN.
Although I don't hate Win XP I do hate the fact that Microshaft doesn't give you a choice of whether or not you want to run their latest OS.
Windows XP pro is pretty decent but they should pre- load that into all the PCs rather than the half-assed home version.
Windows XP also has DRM. I know this because I *cough* purchased a copy of the cooperate edition that didn't need activation. When I tried to update it, it gave me an invalid key error and told me to call the piracy hotline.
I went back to 2000 professional and it absolutely blows it away in performance hands down. It consumes alot less resources and there are no stability issues. Sure I have to install some 3rd party drivers, but that doesn't bother me any.
Unless my PC is going to cook breakfast for me, then I have no need for a new operating system, thank you very much.
And another thing, with Windows XP, you can only set permissions on your "my Documents" to make it "private" when on Windows 2000 you can encrypt any folder and file, and set permissions for any person that want or don't want to access it.

you can set permissions in xp pro like normal, but in home you have to go into safe mode. also...that "piracy hotline" thing...you must have gotten a *bad* bad copy lol.

since windows messenger was pretty much glued into the system before sp1, i think i can judge the os based on it.
