View Full Version : Remove All Traces Of Mozilla

Mozilla has a horrible bug in it that once again may force me to ditch it. The first time I ditched Mozilla was because of a bug with the bookmarks that caused Mozilla to flat out crash any time I tried to Manage or File bookmarks. That was on Windows ME, and I eventually found an obscure folder than contained Mozilla's settings, bookmarks, and whatnot. I'm on Win2000 now, and cannot find this folder anywhere. So, I figured I'd try to delete every trace of Mozilla from my system and reinstall, and just move in my backup bookmarks file and all would be well. However, this proved more difficult than I thought. After uninstalling Mozilla, deleting the Mozilla program folder, searching for and deleting all Mozilla files I could find with Windows file search, and cleaning every reference to "Mozilla" with jv16 registry cleaner; when I reinstall Mozilla, it still remembers my corrupted bookmark folder and settings. It seems as though they bury and hide this info deep in some obscurely located and obscurely named folder. Because of this, I can't use Mozilla as the bookmarks are corrupted. I'm sure as hell not gonna reformat so I can use a bug-infested browser. If I can't find out how to do a clean install, I'm just gonna switch back to IE.

BTW, I've had problems with this bug as far back as Mozilla 1.1, and probably earlier, but I can't remember. It always occurs when I put a folder called "Links" on the personal toolbar. It usually works fine for weeks and months even. Then, for some unknown reason, it screws up. I'm sure it's not a virus as I just scanned for viruses and trojans. If I get Mozilla back, I won't try making new folders on the personal toolbar, as Mozilla obviously can't handle such functions.

Ok, I just installed Phoenix on my system after not having it on here for months. It automatically imported my Mozilla bookmarks from seemingly nowhere, as I can't find a bookmarks.html file on my entire hard drive! Where and why are they hiding shit?

I asked about this months ago on the Mozilla forum after 1.2 was released and got no answers. All I want to know is how to completely and thoroughly cleanse my Win2K system of all files and folders installed by Mozilla.

Ok, I just restarted with every trace of Mozilla and Phoenix I could find deleted. No bookmarks.html files or registry keys related to it on my system. Still, after installing Mozilla 1.3, managing bookmarks caused Mozilla to crash. Don't tell me anything about 1.2.1 because that caused the same exact problem.

Beta 1.4 is out, you could try that...

Try bookmarks.htm instead of .html, you might find it there

I don't know the win2k file system, do they have things for individual users? for example, on xp it would be stored in (C:\Documents and Settings\Phalkon\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\hfmj2b7o.slt)

Find the profile folder, search through that, thats where mine is, there were 3 instances of the profile thing on my computer, with 3 instances of bookmarks.html, 2 in programs folder, one in documents/settings, maybe if one changes and the rest don't....

Oh yeah! Thanks so much. I just went back into Documents and Setting (Win2K and XP have the same file system) and realized that I didn't have "show hidden files and folders" selected (I usually do, but I recently had company that wanted to use my computer, so...). Rawr, now I can finally do a clean reinstall.

I'm glad to see K-Meleon is being upgraded again. I'll be sure to check it out if Mozilla corrupts. Although I doubt that will happen since I'm not putting folders on the toolbar anymore.

Hmm......my top two are MyIE2 and Phoenix in that order. What plugins do you use with IE? Surely you must have some to get worthy functionality out of it to make it your favorite browser.......
