View Full Version : Family Approval

What does your family think about your Internet lifestyle, specifically file sharing. How much do they know of what you do? Is it over their heads? Do they approve of file sharing? If you are a teen (or still live w/ parents), what do they think of file sharing?

Just curious..........as my Dad always seems to start arguments over P2P. He constantly chastizes and criticizes me on the topic. He doesn't approve of my file sharing, but then again he doesn't do anything (ie restrictions, etc.) to stop it. And of course, he doesn't know about the details of what I do.

He does know that I spend a lot of time on ZP and he loathes online communication for some reason. I don't think he knows that I post here as much as I have and I just don't think he understands why I do it. We have drifted over the last couple years, not being understanding of one another, and bickering over it that we don't try to solve it. He has the misconception that I am a lazy no good for nothing bastard and that the Internet just aids in my laziness and my disintegration. I still manage to surprise him by bringing home decent grades. He just thinks that I am not applying myself fully. In a way I am lazy, but I don't have many regrets. In conclusion, he sees what he wants to see and draws up inferences that are completely untrue. He doesn't give me the time of day and never seems to be around when I am doing something very productive. There are far worse things in which I could be doing and all my friends know that I am a very upbeat, responsible guy. My parents are ignorant and are way too strict IMHO. I could go on and on.......lol

Wow...........didn't mean to delve into that so deep. My friend's parents confiscated his computer and have since locked it in their room in some sort of safe. I wanted this to be more of a lighthearted thread. Anyway, I would just like to hear on other's thoughts on the issue.

-Peace

my parents call me a lazy ass when i spend most my day on the comp on weekdays and the occasional weekends. i bring good grades, all A's and a B (thats been my same report card for the last 3 years). they don't care that i file share, hell i even made a couple of cd's for my dad. they just don't like me being on the comp 24/7. oh and they always accuse me that i'm doing it cause of porn. lmao

ps-they use to hate me being online for more than an hour on 56k because it tied up the phone line. now with cable, they don't care.

I don't live with my parents but I always keep in touch with my Mom, and she always thought I was a bit crazy.
She's pretty tech savvy too, and she worries that the feds will come breaking down my door or something.
I no longer live an anarchistic lifestyle out in the streets so now I do it with a keyboard and a mouse.
I'm not directly harming anybody and I truly believe in the cause of Internet freedom, so as long as I have the power to help change things for the better, I will use my skills to the max because these are very important times and what we do now will alter the course of telecommunications for years to come.
I suggest joining the electronics frontier foundation because they are fixed on the cause and they are working non stop to protect free speech.
The people lost TV and radio and we can't afford to lose the internet as well.

I bought my parents computer for them. I also installed and showed them how to work Audiogalaxy (now dead-and they are pissed because it was so easy and it had ALL dad's bebop music), Clean IMesh (btw-they admire dr.damn), and WinMx ( not to fond of because of the queues). I also showed them how to use their CD-burner & make their own jewel cases (they love that part).
Everytime I go down to visit I have to go with dad and he has to show off his ever expanding 50s-60s music collection.

I created a couple of downloading monsters. Always callin to find out what program I'm using or Are they closing down IMesh ? No ma - Don't worry.

btw - I told them about ZP (not my user-name though) and they say they check it out.

Hi Mom & Dad !!!

Well that's what my parents think about my internet lifestyle.

You think they are bad you ought to see my grandparents !! OMG !! They are worse !!

Yeah, I have 56k connection as well but Callwave helps with that.

My Dad just looks at the Interent with disdain as a whole. If I'm not doing research on it for education purposes, he'd rather me just me just go out somewhere with friends. He's just an old-fashioned conservative. If he were not ignorant and closed-minded, I would be able to better deal with him. I think he's intimidated in many ways too. HIs view on life, while with good intentions, is just sometimes ridiculous.

It's really hard to get into a debate with him in anything. Whenever you seem to start to sway his attitude, he just tells you that you are full of BS. He won't have it any other way.

Hehe......interesting site, Winphuk. Hopefully my dad won't see it though. There's no telling what he'll do, lol.

thought:

you will often find that the greatest people in history, were discouraged of greatness

for example, MJ didn't make his high school varsity team, yet he persevered and is now the greatest basketball player the world has ever seen.

Albert Einstein was discouraged of his crazy theories but hey look what we all think of him today

Maybe you (nobody in particular)will go on to invent a new computer component (software or hard) yet while you were in the learning stages of computers, people said they didn't like it, or they told you to go outside and play (in no way condemning going outside and playing) anyway, just choose your own paths.
We all die, anyway.

My dad has allways been a tech junkie, and most of the time we spend talking consists of new technologys and trading of breaking tech news

BUT, he hates that I'm on here all the time, and my grades have suffered some, along with other responabilitys I have

I'm just fuckin adicted to this site, why else would i be up till 12AM looking through old posts? I've been on this site since about 3PM when I got home from school, this site, and 3 other P2P sites

He is also scared about me getting in trouble for doing illeagle activities with computers, I can't even list how many I do in a typical day...

My dad had no use for computers till he discovered PORN ! Then he was off and running and more receptive to it. lol. He really is pretty funny. When I showed him what he could do with IMesh he got into his learning mode and dove in. Same with mom-not the porn so much though...hmmm.. It's funny sometimes what it takes to get people's interest sparked.

btw - my adult children both download and burn their own music and one of them is a correctional officer and my 3 younger boys all download too. Although they are more into Shakira, Eminem, etc ( so if you browse my files that's why their music's there.) So my whole family (generations) downloads.

CH same with my father...

Soon as I set him up on Napster back in the day....he was off like a fuckin' shot...lol

We got DSL a week after he 'played' with Napster.

He found rare albums....classic not out on CD that some kick ass music lover pulled of LP and cleaned up.

He still downloads like crazy....

He also buys the classic stuff he likes on CD and usually goes for oldies jazz and such...

As for his stance on me 'wasting my life' on a PC. It's not there...lol

I do PC work on the side...get between 100-200 per job and sometimes more...plus I keep old hardware.

I do A/V work...projection stuff...ect ect etc

And the PC side of it all is just whatever I want....my time...so I can do whatever I wish with it.

Plus whenever he has PC problems...no tech support..I am the tech support lol

Rahwgwar, nice thread dude! It's off beat from the normal... :)

Also if he doesn't get it (your dad) already...PC's are the wave of the future...the more you learn now the less work you'll be doing down the line..you can enjoy life then. The teen years are a waste anyway...lol

I don't discuss this shit w/ my parents, it's that simple, plus I don't live with them, so that probably has a little to do with it also, and also I bought my comp w/ my own cash, so even if they did have negative feelings toward my "internet lifestyle" (which they probably wouldn't) there wouldn't be a damn thing they could do about it, man am I glad I'm not a F-ing teen anymore

@ chipperrox

teen years are okay, but I feel sorry for anyone who's teen years are the best they'll ever have

I remember when I first got the internet and my parents feared that all that was on the internet was porn because of news stories nearly everyday dealing with the ever growing porn community on the internet (back when Yahoo! started getting big).

Ragwhar, I must be your twin, we like the same TV shows and my parents are the exact same way. They think I'm lazy and don't understand at all, think I'm addicted, well, I am, but my dad seems to always see me when I'm on the comptuer and never sees me when I'm getting anything productive done. My mom doesn't like me downloading movies, so I've kind of stopped, not to mention the fact that I've seen virtually every movie I've ever wanted to see. And practically all of the music I download is something that's probably never been on a CD available for sale, like techno remixes of Zelda music lol, she doesn't care, that's what P2P is all about, and you've gotta love it. I mainly download TV shows now though, and most of those aren't even on DVD or anything, so P2P is the only way to get them.

She sees my ever growing collection of TV shows on DVD in my room, each with their own case and cover and label. I also am putting our family videos on DVD now, her dad got them converted from old style 8mm to VHS, and now I'm putting them on DVD with my capture card and DVD burner, so they'll be original quality forever.

I got good grades in high school, and I am one of the top producers at my work, I make a lot of money, so I don't see what's wrong with staying up until 3AM every morning on the comp.

parents say i'm antisocial, lazy, need more exercise etc etc.

they think the extent of my file-sharing is downloading a song every now and then. pah! talk about dumb!

they'll probably get at me today about it (even though it's the holidays) but to tell the truth i'm not very bothered. see, my nice sparkly 10gb ipod arrived this morning.............yum!!!!!!!

I haven't lived with any "parent" type figures in years, but they totally wouldn't care, and would want me to make CD"s for them or something.

My Fiance and I do as we please, have our own place. Thank God!

I can't imagine having a fiance and still living in either of our parents houses, and doing this stuff. lol

Well, I still live at home. That should change withing the next two years. My dad doesn't care that I file share I even asked him about it and he asked me to download a few 70's band songs for him and make a cd. My mom said just don't get caught. They tend to get mad at me because I tie up the phoneline for hours at a time since we still have dailup. I haven't been able to convince them of the benefits of cable or even dsl. At one time I have about 1 gig of files, I think 540megs of it was music and the rest of it was ebooks, and anime music videos. Pretty good for having 28K dialup. But at the moment RIAA hasn't gone after the dialup people. So I'm safe for now.

My dad says "Be careful"

My mom says "I bet God doesn' t like it." Or "I dunno... The government knows everything, they'll come after you like they did me"... she's convinced someone's after her.

Basically, if they wanted me to stop, they'd do something about it, but neither one of them knows what or how.

My parents know that much of what I do is illegal, but they also know that I buy what I think's good, so I'm somewhat justified.

Although the ratio of burns to buys is about 50:1. But that's only because I only get an allowance of $10 a week :wings
