so heres a q..
I have a movie in two parts (Winterwar). It is in Finnish. I also have two .sub files, one for each half. But I cant make any player show the .sub files along with the flick! Im like what the fuck am I missing here? Isnt a .sub file just like an .srt file? those are usually picked up by the player no prob. Any help welcome.

Hi, which players have you tried thus far?
Different players have different abilities, and some are none sub friendly.

Are you sure it's basically a text file, check with notepad or something. There's also some weird vobsub .sub format where the subtitles are glued as pictures on top of the avi, it usually needs some file called .idx or something too though along with the vobsub program of course. If it's text file try to change it to another format like srt, txt, etc.

okay, basically Ive only tried with two versions (newest and the good old one) of Mediaplayer, cuz I usually use it, and Ive tried with da Playa, which I never use. I think maybe evioola is on to something, as the .sub files are listed as cd images in some proggy, just cant remember which lol. However, the .sub files DO open in notepad and it are "read-only" files. I did try to change it to .srt but no luck. Krell may also be on to something, the WMP error report says :
The file type is not supported by the Player. The following table lists the file types supported by the Player. If the file type you are trying to play is included in this table, then the file may have been encoded by using a codec that is not supported by Windows Media Player. If this is the case, Windows Media Player cannot play the file.
The file type is supported by the Player, but the file was compressed by using a codec that is not supported by the Player.
The file type is supported, but you are trying to play it in a way that is not supported by the Player. For example, you may have attempted to drag a DVD file with a .vob extension from a DVD to the Windows Media Player icon. Or you may have attempted to open a .vob file by clicking Open on the File menu.
You are trying to play one part of a multipart file. Use a newsreader or other program to combine the files, and then try again.
Note the :SUB format is NOT on the list mentioned in point one, but neither is .srt, which I dont understand as I know Ive watched movies with .srt files to it, tho I had to use an older version of Mediaplayer to do that.
So..can you decipher the above mess? Whats the next step?

I mean, when you open the file with notepad, can you read the subs or does it look like something like an .exe opened with notepad would look like (a mess)?. Basically you can tell it from the size too, if it's megs it's a VobSub .sub (non-text) if it's much less it's prolly a regular .sub (text). If it's text then changing the extension is not enough, you need a program that can save it in different format like Micro-DVD, google around and I'm sure you can find one. If you have installed VobSub with nimo codecpack or similar there's a 'sub resync' program that should be able to save subs in different formats. Try BSPlayer, it's great. :) Have you checked the subtitle sites for alternative subs?
If you can't make it work then attach the file here and I'll have a look at it.

ok theyre like 54 kb and readable, so plain text I guess. Ill have a look at vobsub see if I can figure it out. The subs came from the source of the flick so they should be okay. Lemme try..

aha! Now, the vobsub resync thing was Martian to me, but I downloaded bsplayer and I made it import the sub file, so now its working..very well. I cant say I like bsplayers layout (I hate when a mouse-over doesnt prompt a description of functionality), but as Ive never seen it before Ill have to look into it before judgement. I must ofcourse acknowledge that it did the job my trusty wmp couldnt cope with, so thanks for the tip!
