Ok well after installing Red Hat 9 [Linux] I got aquainted with the desktop and all and went to look for some software. I downloaded them to a folder i made and double clicked but well. they wont open. TO make the story short I found out Linux has a wat different way to open programs. Ive been looking around but cant seem to find any good guides on how to open files and install, using the shell prompts. acessing other partition folders and etc. So if ya got some info to help me out or links, dont wait any longer PoST it here.

well ive gotten a little farther than you; i have gained access to my windows partitons and installed a few rpms, but right now im looking for a media player for linux that plays mp3s, since xmms seems to have 'legal issues' with mp3s...
anyone know of a good media player?

well, i just double click on em, and an installer of sorts unpagages them. i think you need to be logged on as root to do this though.

You just have to download and install a really simple rpm to be able to play mp3:s in RedHat.
Here is the address:
http://havardk.xmms.org/dist/xmms-1.2.7-rh8-rh9-rpm/
Good luck !

You guys are spoiled! Back when I started messing with Linux....you had to install tarballs and rpms via command line....with like a choice of 20 some commands...
Sorry though...I haven't tried RH9 so I couldn't tell ya whats up with their new package GUI deal...

The easiest way to get your rpms would be to just go here http://shrike.freshrpms.net/ and download apt and synaptic after that after you can get all the rpms from the site with out having to bother with command line it downloads the programs you want and installs them for you
