i know im in the wrong place here guys, but this is the only forum i can find that will give answers reasonably quickly, and im sure since you all are experts on file sharing, you must know a thing or two about other computer functions..........I have just moved a computer into my room that I used to use........... I would like to put some files on it that are on my current computer, however, I am having a lot of trouble doing so, I tried creating a cd, using a briefcase, as well as a floppy disk, and none worked......however, there is one little problem that makes this hard........the other computer isnt hooked up to the internet.......help if you can........if not, can someone direct me to where to post this question...........thanx all........

How big of files are you moving?

What part of the process is not working (using cd, disc, etc)

Have you tried using a re-writable CD-RW to move between computers? Copy and paste to CD-RW like you would for a regular disc but with lost more room. And after you aret done you can delete files on the disc and copy some more files and move them.

Also . . . what O/S are they, and do they have network cards in them?

Its a simple thing to network the two, enable File and Print Sharing, and use a Cross Over Cable, that can be bought at Radio Shack.

Not having much experience with transferring software, I can't recommend any to you. But there are a plethora out there that can suit your needs.

As Krell said, a parallel cable is all you need. You will have to lay out 10 to 20 bucks for it, but it can be found at any real electronics store.

first...........the files are small.........but they are important........i want to be able to play movies on the other computer, so i need my WMP 9 and codec pack at least.....all the parts dont work......at least what i have tried..........no i havent tried CD-RW's.....i only buy CD-R's (im cheap and CD-RW's arent exactly my type.......)......krell........my newer computer is Windows ME, older is Windows 95, new computer is a gateway, old is a packard bell.....if that helps.......oh yeah.......the connecting cable thing will need more explaining.....also since there arent that many files i want to excahnge, i want the easiest way out possible........(cheapest too)...........thanx..........also it is possible for me to hook the older one up to the internet (just found that out)......so if there is a place to do one of two things it would help a lot.......1. download a free version of WMP 9 (or update from 6.1)........2. excahnge the files between computers.......hopefully this will help you guys......

the connecting cable will only work if you have network cards.. though i dunno if it'll work w/ 95 even.. but i'm sure krell will answer that.. u'll have to let'em know if u have network cards for each or not.

Make a folder on your desktop.

Using Explorer, drag the files that you want in to that folder.

Launch Nero, and put in a blank CD.

In the Nero browser, drag the files in your desktop folder to the left pane, and whe you have them all, look at the bottem, make sure you have not exceeded the CD size, then click the Burn Icon at the top.

Dont try to burn a movie and data files on the same CD.

Make sure you burn this as data files.

This is the easiest way.

And dont be a cheapskate, just put the files you need on a blank CD and get on with life.

. . . you befungle me, you really do.

In Nero, use the Wizard.

Chose CD > Complile a new CD > Data CD > Create a new data CD > Finish.

It should say ISO1 at the top left.

Then drag and drop.

try that

seems so simple when i do it the easy way........now.......when i put the cd in the other computer..........i get error messages when trying to open WMP9..........the messages say:
The WININET.DLL file is linked to missing export SHLWAPI.DLL:StrNCatA
and the WMP9 install icon gives me:
D:\Windows Media Player\SETUP_WM.EXE A device attached to the system is not working.
i copied the file as the whole Windows Media Player folder under C:\Program Files
all i want (again) is to play my video files on WMP9 on the older computer.......

aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggg ggggggg

*stabs self in neck repeatedly!*

. .. . . OK .. . .(checks pulse) . . . you cant just drag a folder under program files . . . to another PC, and expect it to work.

Programs have to be installed. Havent you watched when you install a program . . . what is it doing?

A setup file, using an installer . . . a BLAH.exe, will install a copy of BLAH on to your system, and make the proper registry entries.

The only time you copy a folder under Program Files, is to back up the files there.

In order to install WMP9 on your other machine, you need the original installer.

ill look another time for a disk of the installer, but i doubt i will find it.......so i guess that leaves me with the only other option of trying to find WMP 9 somewher in cyperspace.........now......the question is...........if i have WMP 6.1 can it be updated using the internet to WMP 9, because if so, i can hook up the internet on the other computer and download.........i know i can get the codecs off the internet, b/c thats where i got them in the first place...........but WMP came with my new computer, so i dont think i even have a disk......

scottie255
April 18th, 2003, 07:49 PM
think i found it............i will try it on the other computer, but i found a site where i can download WMP 9 for free........all on my own too (for once)

It its possable to set up a network connection between 2 computers using a parallel port. I don't exactly know how it works in earlier versions, but in XP the option is under where you make a new connection. Hopefully Krell will be back to help me here, he is the best.

What is keeping you from going online with your other computer?

You spent all that time and energy (never mind posts) to come to the conclusion that you need to download WMP9???!

On a 56k modem w/ a connection speed of 41.3 kbps, I can download WMP9 in about 25 minutes.

SAVE the setup file (installer), burn it to a disk and whatever else you need. Get it done in one clean sweep so as not to create a stack of coasters.

In the morning, buy yourself an Easter present by dropping by Best Buy (or similar store) and buying a Windows training guide.

I hope you understand what Krell was saying.......You need to install programs under that computer that you have.......installation writes registry keys that allow the program to run. Copying the folder you installed to does not get recognized by the registry and you cannot run it.

K, try unplugging your hard drive, and plugging it into the computer in your room, while it's turned off, drag the files onto your desktop and you're done.

scottie255

Ok.........my apologies......

I would recommend you take a close look at media player classic. It supports more formats than the original WMP 6.4. It's a little grating on resources, but I would still give it a shot. Good luck.

http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=1045531002

You can get to WMP 6.4 through a run command in XP, but I don't have it at hand right now. Can anyone fill me in on this? Thanks.

I just found this thread and read the entire thing, waiting for you to find that out....

95 is very limited, you can't even install IE6, or anything past 5.5

To download the latest media player for 95, just go to the microsoft updates site ( http:\\windowsupdate.microsoft.com ) in 95, it should give you a list of available updates, and since 95 has not been supported for a few years, you'll have to dig, but I can almost garuntee you'll find an update, 7 or 8 *should* be there, 9 will NOT be

I know a serial cable can be used, my dad backed up a few hd's that way one time, I think we did that in 3.1 or 95, so if its in xp, I wouldn't worry, just a warning if you ever need to do it, its SLOW, you'd almost be better off copying the code to a piece of paper by hand, and creating a new program from the code you wrote down

i think i have what im gonna do figured out guys............i have decided that since 95 is so limited, i will dump the compu and install me from my new computer........but before i do this i want to put all of the stuff on the old computer on disk.............thanks for the suggestions, and i will return with any problems during the process (it will take me a while though)...............

phalkon30

ME? if you have 98 I would recommend that instead...ME is crap IMO

scottie255
April 21st, 2003, 04:52 PM
i dont have 98, but ME is better than 95, so ill go with that.............i think i have everything i need EXCEPT..............i need to know how to dump everything off the old computer...............but before that i cannot find any disks for word 2000 which i have on my new computer (it may be on the setup disk for my computer but i dont know) so does anybody know where microsoft word setup would be because if i can find that i think (correct me if im worng) i can just put the setup files on a blank disk, and go through all of the setup steps on the old computer............(that is what i have planned for all of the other programs).......and finally, to complete my plan, how would i transfer files downloaded from the internet (a pack of games as well as the all-important codec pack.......)?.........i know how to just put them on a disk, but i dont know what im doing after that (i dont think i can drag and drop or copy and paste the files into the old computer), so if i can get all of this down, i think i can do this without ruining my old computer.............

phalkon30

Well, the setup files will most likely be on the setup disk, in fact, I can garuntee you will not find the setup files on your computer for office

Once you have copied files to a disk, whether it be floppy, cd, zip, whatever, just copy them off that disk onto the fresh computer, its honestly that easy, click and drag

BUT, if you want to move programs, you're out of luck, you can keep settings by copying the old programs folders to the new computer, but you have to install the programs, you can't just copy them over and have them work

Rahwgwar
April 22nd, 2003, 03:34 PM
If you can find the installation disk for Word, you should install that way. Check for compatibility issues however.

You can copy files from a disk you created. BUT you probably can't copy any programs. You will need the installing executable for that.

EDIT: Well Phalkon got to it before me, lol. O well........
