Ok I have decided to stick with Windows Xp Home and also install Red Hat Linux 9. I have Partition MAgic and well All I need is now some directions on how exactly to do this without screwing this up. {id mess aroud with it but my parents bought this computer for me so I cant mees it up. IF anyone has knowledge on how to go about on doing this help me out. BTW I have Windows Xp HOme Edition OEM that came pre installed with computer.

If you are planning on using partition magic to make a seperate partition which you are going to use Linux on.. its really simple.

Partition magic should have an option to allocate unused space and create a partition while windows is running. If you open up the program its pretty self explanitory. Just make a partition thats about 2 gigabytes in size.. that is plenty of space for Red Hat.

Now once you have created that other partition .. you should be able to boot up off of the Red Hat CD and install it to that partition. Make Sure that you select the correct partition during installation or you could wipe out the wrong one.

Red Hat can be picky with your hardware.. hopefully everything you have in your PC is not extremely generic or Red Hat wont install properly.

Once you have installed it.. there should be a boot option placed in your boot.ini file to give you the option of starting up on Windows XP or Red Hat.

Also, if you want Red Hat to read your windows files, your windows drive needs to be FAT32. If it doesn't matter to you, just keep it at NTFS.

It doesn't need to be FAT32 to read. You can read from NTFS, but writing to NTFS is not recommended.
You can edit fstab under linux to grant it read only access to an NTFS partition.
