I have recently discovered that my ISP is apparently "Thottling" anything that connects to a remote port of 6699 and 6257, hence my DL's and UL's are extremely slow. BUT, I have also recently discovered that whenever WinMX connects to a different remote port other than 6699/6257 (ex. a port in the 7000 range) my DL/UL are fine.

I know which ports it is connecting to due to the "Traffic" log from Sygate Personal Firewall, which I recently upgraded to from Zone Alarm.

I have no problems connecting to either port mentioned above, it is just the 6699/6257 that are slow.

Is there anyway to get WinMX to connect to one of the 7000 range port numbers more than it connects to the 6699/6257 ports? I have noticed that it connects to the 6's alot more than the 7's.

Any ideas/info is ALWAYS GREATLY appreciated!

yeah you can change winmx ports.

change them. just go to settings and then change the ports under internet connections.

Even though I have used WinMX since 2.6 I have not had to change the ports until now. I have messed with them a little. This changing the listening ports, it changes the actual port WinMX connects to? I thought it was just for listening.

Thanks!

Thanks!

there was a faq floating around awhile back and it simply recommended placing a number one in front of all port settings.

Because many isps are closing the default ports.

So yes change them.

Would ANY port number do (I know, stay above 5001). I noticed in my Sygate "Traffic" log that there are some ports like 7950,7951,7952 that when I connec to them the connection is GREAT! DL and UL are just about full speed. I know this for a fact cause I had a few UL going when I dissconnected from the network, then reconnected. The port BEFORE the dissconnect was 6699 and the new one was 7951. I had someone jump on right after I hooked up to 7951 and their UL went full speed while the others, which were still from the 6699 port, were still going at <1k/s.

Thanks for the info! I'll give it a try tonight,

I just noticed something about my connecting to those 7950-7952 ports. In the Traffic log it is showing me as connecting to c3312.z1301.winmx.com

the c3312 portion changes with the 79XX number, so that if I connect to c3318.z1301.winmx.com it will be port 7951 but c3316.z1301.winmx.com is 7952. Any ideas what this is all about? These are my un-restricted ports.

Thanks again!!

as long as it works, who cares why? it makes no real difference what port you use or what zone alarm says

there are like 65000 ports to choose from--change them every day if you want to--i promise no animals or 3rd world tribesmen will be killed by it

Doing a name lookup

c3318.z1301.winmx.com->66.11.167.173->cache-server3.tor.winmx.com

whois and a bit of guesswork suggests it is a colo box at a
hosting company in Ottawa Canada.

Interesting, I'd say this is a server operated by the creators of winmx,
probably to tell people the addresses of other winmx users when they
first join the network.

No

Correct.

>Would ANY port number do (I know, stay above 5001)
Almost anything from 1-65535 is ok, avoid 80 and 135-139.

Thank you for this info. I guess, from what I have been reading at http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&group=alt.music.mp3.winmx is that I am trying to connect to a specific peer cache server. I wih to avoid anything that has anything to do with ports 6699 and 6257. Any way to do this with ver 3.31? I seem to remember way back in the history of WinMX there was a way to do this. Is it still supported somewhere in WinMX or is it gone for good?

BTW: you were 100% correct for the Whois. Sygate does this also but it was 3am and I needed to get to bed so I declined to look it up.

I may have found the solution to my problem. I added ports 7950 thru 7970 to the TCP and UDP remote ports list in Sygate. I then changed the listening ports to 16699/16257. The BIGGEST change I did was the WinMX peer server choice. Instead of choosing the "North America" server I picked the "Europe" server. I have been connected for about an hour with full speed ups and downs.

It may as well be. I have been messing around with all sorts of settings and port numbers between WinMX and Sygate. The solution: In the connection settings in WinMX I noticed there was an option to choose which server(s) to connect to. There was North Anerica, South America etc... I chose the "Europe" option. I have been online for 15 hours (a record for me) AND my speeds are full speed. No problems - YET! (Knock on Wood). If there are any changes I'll post them.

Thanks for the help!
