i have a song that seems to be a read only .mp3 file.
it will play if i open it to my playlist each time, although it is already listed there.
there is no info in the id tag.
does this happen often?
how is this done and why?

go to the folder the mp3 is in.... right click (on the mp3)> properties.... and uncheck "Read Only" then hit apply or Ok

Or do the same to the folder and uncheck the semi-greyed out Read Only to remove it from all the files...

if you dragged and dropped them off of an mp3 cd, they will be read only by default

ccs.......when i go to the properties, in the folder......it is checked off as "archive".
i downloaded this song.
could it have been a ripped...rip-cd?
is that what u mean notbob?
i don't know what u mean by drop & drag.
from where?

ps....i mentioned that there was no info in the id tag.
it won't allow me to alter, either.
this is when i discovered it was read only.

Uncheck Archive then...they do similar things.

Notbob was saying someone could have copied the files too CD then copied them back to the HD. CDR's are read only so they stay with that attribute...

I did notice stuff coming off Kazaa had the archive tab ticked off....

ccs.....okay, i did that. it still doesn't work. it seems if i play it straight from my music folder or add it fresh, from my music folder to my playlist, it will play.
but if i change playlists and then come back to the one it is in, it again, will not play, unless i delete and add it again.
when i go back into properties......it is still "unchecked" for anything.
when i go to edit the id tag, it still won't allow me, stating it is a "read only"
could it be winamp somehow?
it's not a big deal.....i will dl it again.
the mystery itself......stumps me.
maybe it is what notbob suggests.

but why?
what is the purpose?
it's not like it hinders me listening to it...it's just a pain in the ass that i can't list it in a playlist.
