i think i have been somehow hacked through WinMX. i have a firewall and updated anti-virus software. i have two drives, my C:\ is where WinMX was installed, and my F\: is where my file share folder was set.
today while downloading a song i noticed someone downloading uninstall.exe off of me. curious, i checked the location of it and it was the install folder on my C:\ drive which wasn't being shared!
the uninstall.exe then disappeared from my WinMX folder. then the same user downloaded my errorlog file in that folder. i shut off WinMX and tried to uninstall it from windows, but it wouldn't let me.
figuring i'd been corrupted with some sort of virus i reformatted and re-installed. i don't know if i can trust WinMX anymore though. has anyone ever heard of this?

The reason why you cant uinstall winmx is becouse the uinstaller "disappeared" lol

yeah, i understand this, but i don't understand how it disappeared. if someone can remotely delete the uninstaller from my computer, who knows what other trouble could be caused.

Have you tried using add/remove programs in the control panel to uninstall?

yeah i tried that. it said the program doesn't appear to be on my machine anymore, eventhough it exists in my program list. then it asked me if i would like to remove the entry from my program list. WinMX was still working though.
it doesn't matter now cause i reinstalled windows (xp). i probably should have just re-installed WinMX over top of the corrupted one, but i thought i better play it safe.

Why dont you just reinstall winmx again. This time just make a new folder to install it under. Rename it winmx2 or something that way you know its a new install and you can be sure that this new folder is not corrupted.
nah you didnt get hack, you were probably sharing sub folders on winmx within the shared directory and you didnt realize this. This is a common thing that happens.
weeeee
dont forget to ride those waves*

yes...
and i cant explain how it happened, but i can give some info...
if you selected to share folders on your "f:\" drive, then it will share those files. but if you also tell winmx to download files to a folder on your "c:\" drive, then it will share that folder as well.
did you perhaps select the download folder as the winmx directory?
it doesnt explain how it deleted the uninstaller, but...

geez...it sure sounded scary reading your post.
could u imagine watching it happen, literally?
freaky.
but as the others have stated there is always some logical explanation.
and theirs seem reasonable.

well, it was enough to freak me out anyways. one correction i should make, it was the errcatch file, not an errlog file that they took next. i figured if they altered the contents they could cause it operate ouside of normal parameters. excluding that, what anyone would want with these files is beyond me. unless it's like some big scheme where someone is hoarding a bunch of uninstall.exe's, and everytime he steals one from someone, they in turn are forced to steal one off someone else. then it's an endless cycle of uninstall.exe and errcatch file stealing. just to satisfy the demand of an insatiable madman of errcatch files. but, yeah i was freaked. (i was considering stealing one off someone else)
i am am almost %100 percent certain that i was not sharing that folder, but i suppose i may have set a share folder there by accident, it's not a default location so i would have had to have typed it in manually..
it's out there now, so if it happens to anyone else hopefully they'll find it. :sw
