Anyone know a program that can identify the encoder used to make an Mp3, by reading the Mp3? My player might have a problem reading Mp3's made by some codecs.

Hey thanks. Turns out my player doesn't like Lame 3.90 [alpha] or Lame 3.92, Bugger!

what are you playing your mp3's with?

also when I had problems like that I re-encoded the files. It's not a good idea to re-encode, but when the darn thing won't play, it can't be a bad deal then. lol

It's a car stereo so I'll just re-encode like you say. It's not that many files and it'll only be for the car version. Most of my musics 192kbps so the difference might not be that noticeable in a car. I hope not too many future codecs are uncompatible.

encspot. some freeware tag editors from download.com show the encoder as well.

btw u sure its just the Lame files that don't work? most lame files are VBR which may be why ur car-stereo doesn't play them.

Hey, are the mp3's that won't play Variable Bitrate? That might have something to do with it, because some players don't play variable bitrate.

None are VBR. The problem Mp3's do actually play , but with a lot of loud pops and squeaks. I made a seemingly random list of songs that didn't play, then when I scanned then with encspot they were all either Lame 3.90 [alpha] or 3.92. There were atleast a dozen different encoders including other Lame versions which were fine, which is lucky for me as I'd made 100's of files with Lame 3.90 which works.

which built of lame 3.92 are u using? i prefer Dibrom's build myself but u might want to try both the standard and this one to see whether there is any difference.

I think Spongebob Squarepants was referring to mp3's he had downloaded.
But yeah he should get a good encoder like Dibrom's as it is optimized and more eficient.

What if an mp3 was originally encoded with Xing and then re-encoded with LAME. Will Encspot be able to tell, or will it just report LAME as the encoder. If it can't tell, is there a prog that can?

when you re-encode a mp3 what you are essentially doing is converting it back to wav and then back to mp3.

so encspot will read it as the last mp3 codec applied to that file.

the only reason to re-encode is like the above problem, when your mp3 is not being read properly or at all.
