...or codec that works with Win Media player.
I heard there was, but I've never managed to find one. I hate Real and all their shadey policies, but I would like a plugin, so that I can watch content from BBC and Channel 4 sites

I heard there was a way to play RealMedia without having RealPlayer installed. I've also heard there was a way to convert RealMedia files to other formats. However, I haven't been able to find software to do this, so I simply pass RealMedia streams and files, and either get over it or try to find the files in a different format. Anyway, you may want to try an older version of RealPlayer, instead of RealOne, as the older versions were.. less evil, I guess.

Old and sorta outdated...give it a try if you want.

Just download "RealAtLast" and mirror the files from a newer version of Realone if you wanna decode newer streams.
In doing that you will have to install real on SOME system, but who cares....install...grab files...format...lol

Ack, is Real so bad that'd you'd choose to format your hard drive just get the remnants of it off your system?

unfortunately, hating quicktime will not make it go away. qt is good stuff, with mpeg4 and all sorts of other cool stuff. i'm so sorry not everyone can love quicktime.
but it's better than all the codecs for all the other movie types.
if it says ".mov", qt can play it.

and a lot of places do quicktime streams bc they require so little bandwidth. apple has a big qtv list somewhere on their site, i just dont remember where.

I'll still download movies in ASF format. As far as Real and Quicktime go, I just let it pass, as I don't want to see any single video file so much that I'd download bloatware to my computer for it. Especially since I almost never see Real files anywhere nowadays. Quicktime I think is more widespread, especially for movie trailers and such. Still, I can get the entire movie in VCD or XVID formats from any one many online sources.
Anyway, it's early and I don't remember exactly why I started this post. Oh yeah, Real and Quicktime aren't all that bad. I've actually installed both on this computer at some point and I haven't gotten cancer or anything... not yet anyway. Really though, I just uninstalled them, ran a registry cleaner, and all is well. I think Real-paranoia is kinda silly now... especially since there's no significant opposing view points expressed among groups interested in such manners.

I might have found something...
http://snow.prohosting.com/coandco/downloads/realcodecs.exe
Author of the file says it's based on RealAtLast, but with the neccessary registry entries included in the installer...
Doesn't seem to work, though - anybody having success with this?

Well, it stinks, I tell ya! I hate Real-anything too, but I´m getting to the unfortunate conclusion that a lot of DJ or Dance labels websites only stream stuff on RealMedia.
I can´t, for the life of me, fathom why, but I´m getting to a point where I´m actually considering installing one of those old versions of Real Player on my PC.
Do all of them have spyware and adware (well, at least the ones that are still relevant)? Which one would you ppl recommend...(if it´s even possible to recomend anything by Real)?
EDIT : remember, I only wanna get some web-streams...not actually download any .rm

You can get a copy of Real Player 8 from: Old Version/Real (http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=real) it has no Spyware, just turn off the Tray Icon.

cheers guys, but I just refuse to have anying from Real on here, whether its an Old Version or not, anyway most streaming media (which is what I want it for) refuses to play until you update.

I've put together a package with all the necessary files/plugins/reg entries (only 3) to play real content in winamp, without having real installed (in fact you have to uninstall realplayer before running it). It's in a nice NSIS installer, and is fairly up to date. If someone has interest and somewhere to host it, lemme know
If it needs to be updated, maybe I'll get around to installing realone on virtualPC or something so I can get the very newest files

I'm interested, is there anyway u could send this to me?

Web1000 may help ya...create a couple mirrors and make a simple DL.html page with the files to bypass that direct linking BS.
War, if you wanna 'get' streams..use this...
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_software/audio_tools/streambox_vcr.cfm
Then play them through winamp. Same for you White....

prolly not going to happen. I spent enough time getting it to work with winamp, and winamp works just fine. It's all academic anyway, I've nowhere to put it
