Can you get any sound to work at all? Try a cd, or try headphones
First thigns first, open WMP, winamp, and the built in windows volume control, is every slider al the way up? is anything muted?
If we recommended a board, it was most likely an asus, those boards come with a driver disk, did you install everything off that cd? If you did there will be (depending on model) a start menu icon for "PCI Audio Applications", go to that menu, then "Audio Rack" then Mixer
In the mixer program, again check levels, then go to the little tool button with the hammer and wrench, go over to speakers, make sure you have the correct number of speakers selected, and take notice of which port color is your sound out, it will change depending on how many speakers you have set up in this program
Something else, are these speakers amplified? if not they won't make much sound on a Line Out, which your sound card most likely has if its onboard, in that case get some new speakers, or try some headphones
I could keep going, but that would be all in speculation, just answer some of my questions and we'll go from there

ok
Here goes
Downloaded WMP9 and opened then opened Winamp and all slides at the top
Decided to play a song in each Wmp plays fine
Winamp does not have anysound but it jumps the song like 20 secs at a time and no sound comes out
Sound card
Sis 7018 Audio Driver
Graphics card
MPU-401 Compatible
In mixer deck everything is upfull and nothing is muted
2 speakers selected. And there amplified
I did not have this problem untill i upgraded from my old creative labs soundblaster live

that happens a lot when i dl a fake file.
when you downloaded the file or whatever, did it play normally? it may have been corrupted.
try dl'ing it again at a different bitrate/quality... just make sure the two files are different.

Make sure you have the right input and output plugins selected. If not, then it will cause your song to jump with no sound or very screwed up sound.

Right click in the mini visual...
Go to "output plugins"
Now highlight/double click the wavout or directsound output plugin. Then close it all and restart Winamp.
Sounds like you've set wavwriter to be the output and it's kicking out wav's to the C:\....

DUDE!!!
i know what the problem is!!!
ok, what happened is, if you check wave writer or whateve rit is called, it will write the file out as a wave file. somewhere on your comp, you have all the files you have played as waves. check it... i did this once, and got very confoosed.

Uh...dude.....sorry, but you're wrong.
Directsound output may not work if his systems soundcard isn't directsound capable....
waveout is just a basic throughput to the sound device..
Nullsoft Diskwriter is the plugin that feeds whatever is being outputted to a standard 14H wav file. Same with WMA out which makes WMA files outta Winamps output.
Don't confuse the guy....lol I gave him the correct info to switch back to wavout or DS...
'props' on the screenshot though, makes it a hell of alot easier for the dude to understand. Visual aids and all...

yea, that was definitely my bad...
there was a plugin with winamp 2.81, it actually wrote the file from whatever it was to a wave file... i will make another pic of what the file is really called and what the settings look like. apparently, winamp got rid of that plugin (which is ok with me, bc i couldn't get it to write a cd as a wave anyway)
