I have continued to use WinMX version 2.6 with OpenNap servers since reading some time ago about all of the problems that people were having with later versions of WinMX. Many on this forum who had opted for later versions were expressing regret that they had not remained with version 2.6.

I have not followed this forum lately and am wondering if the problems have now dissipated to the point where I should seriously consider upgrading to the currrent version 3.3.

I would like to have candid comments on this subject and would be particularly interested in hearing from those who employed version 2.6 before upgrading to version 3.3.

By the way, I am finding that long queues are a problem using version 2.6 with OpenNap servers.

If you are finding long queues in winmx in version 2.6 you would MOST LIKELY love to go to 3.31 because it has a lot more stuff along with queues.. but since you experience large ones with 2.6 you will also with 3.31 which means they would cancel out and you would only benefit from the new features..

My 2 cents

I used 2.6 for a short time, and liked it quite a bit

I was pleasently surprised when I upgraded, to me it was a HUGE improvement

If you have the installer file for 2.6, then you shouldn't have a problem, just uninstall 3.31 if you don't like it

If you wanna use 2.6 for just OpenNap then you shouldn't have a problem, you can get 2.6 from www.oldversion.com but if you actually wanna connect to the network and download stuff then you're going to run into a problem because Frontcode networks removes the network cache from the old versions everytime they release a new version, so version 2.6's cache no longer exists. At least I'm pretty sure.

you cant access the winmX network on version 2.6, and if you just want to access opennap there are better ways than winMX. basically winMX 2.6 is dead and buried, just upgrade and get it done with.

i did the same as u.
but the new version was upgraded and is now excellent.
i would suggest upgrading.
u can still connect to the opennap servers.
just make sure to put "available files on top".
u will bypass the queues this way, using the WPNP network.
i actually don't even use the opennap servers any longer.
and most of the available files will have multiple users to dl from.
i do this all the time and am in and out of there in no time flat.
good luck and happy dling!!!!!!!!

Lamourlady,

Thanks for the very positive reply.

Before shifting to version 3.3 I would like to bone up on this version, so that when I make the shift I can hit the ground running. Can you recommend any web sites that have tutorials on how to use version 3.3? I went to Slyck.com to download their Guide to WinMX, but for whatever reason only part of it would download.

By the way, did you have to uninstall version 2.6 before installing version 3.3?

http://winmxinfo.cjb.net should have the answer to any question you may have about winmx

Whenever installing new software, or newer versions of something, it is allways recommended to uninstall the previous version first, you will encounter less problems this way, and it can't hurt

Can we still use ver. 3.30 and still connect to the MX network?

I have been having some troubles with my connections lately and think it may be due to ver 3.31 and W2K. I have searched other forums and found someone else with the same problems as I have (DL's <1k/s UL's <1k/s) and this person had read on another forum about an issue (did not go in to detail) with ver 3.31 and W2K.

I recently upgraded to W2K and since then I have been having the above troubles.

Thanks!:tilted

ur a good egg, phalkon.
sorry, swing guy, i haven't been on of late.
glad to see someone popped in to help out.
cause i am certainly not an expert on winmx.
though it is my app of choice, exclusively.
this forum has some very indepth discussion on everything and anything concerning winmx.......just a lot of reading to do....lol.
same goes for u, megadeus.
especially for your connection problems.
there have been others here with the same problems as you're having, and there was a lot of great advice from some of our winmx gurus.
i, unfortunately, am on dial-up and know absolutely nothing concerning these connection problems.
use the "search" function to pinpoint any particulars u may need.
good luck to u both.
;)

p.s.....pop back in to let me know how things worked out.
i'll go do some reading myself.

Well dude I'm asking around, I'm guessing its a setting somewhere, would you mind making a new thread for this topic? I have a feeling it will just conflict with the first one, and you should get more responses that way also

When you do make a new thread make sure to include what kind of internet connection you have, any firewalls, routers?

hey swing guy:

you said something about opennap networks and the queues... you really can't do anything about queues. its a problem with opennap, no matter what client you use (winmx 2.6, 3.3, whatever) you will still have the queues bc it is opennap.

i used 2.6 back in the day... but i stopped using opennap bc it was pretty bad... servers lied about statistics constantly. anyway, i just stick with plain winmx 3.31 now, it does the job.
