All this talk about SARS has me wondering, are you guys afraid? I myself could care les, if I caught SARS tonight and was dead my tomorrow morning it would be just fine with me.

But before we continue I'll just inform you guys a little bit about SARS:

When was SARS first found?
On march 12, 2003, The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a global alert concerning cases of a typical pneumonia in Southeast Asia

What parts of Asia has it been found in?
In the city of Hanoi, Vietnam, the Peoples Republic of China including thr Hong Kong Special Administrasuve Region; and Singapore

What causes SARS?
It is not quite known what causes it, however national and international laboratory testinhg and collaboration is going on.

Who is at risk?
A person who has returned, in the past 10 days, from travel to areas in Asia where SARS cases have been reported OR a person who has visted Scarborough Grace Hospital in Toronto (Canada) in the past 10 days, OR a person who has had close contact (withen 1 meter) with a person who has a probable case of SARS

What are the symptoms of SARS?
-A "suspect" case of SARS is a person who is at risk as noted above, and as developed fever of 38 degress (celesius) or higher, and one or more respiratory systems, inculding: cough, shortness of breath, ot difficulty breathing, or has come in close contact of a "probable" case.
-"Probable" cases of SARS are similar to suspect cases, but often they have a more severe illness, with a progressive shortness of breath and difficulty breathing, and in some cases chest X-Rays show signs of a typical pnemonia.
-Because the disease is so new, a definitive disgnosyic test has not been made.

What do I do if I think I am at risk, or have the symptoms?
-People who are at risk of SARS and who have experienced symptoms of the illness are advised to CALL AHEAD before seeking medical advice from a doctor's office, clinic, or emergency room.

Now that you know all about it, it's time for you to VOTE!!!

An alarming new lung infection continued to spread in many parts of the world today as public health authorities around the globe struggled to stifle the dangerous disease, scientists raced to pinpoint the cause and doctors worked to save victims.

The epidemic seemed to have subsided in Hanoi, where no new cases had been reported in eight days, and officials clamped tough quarantines on schools, hospitals and other institutions in Singapore and Toronto, raising hope that outbreaks would soon subside in those hot spots as well.

"The good news is that Vietnam has contained the outbreak, Singapore is rapidly containing the outbreak, Toronto is rapidly containing the outbreak," said David Heymann of the World Health Organization in Geneva. "So we don't anticipate there will be spread from these places."

But elsewhere the picture remained far less reassuring, with the pace of the epidemic and pattern of spread baffling researchers, and new suspected cases rising steadily. The worldwide tally from severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, jumped another 182 cases and four deaths, pushing the toll to at least 1,804 cases in 15 countries and at least 62 deaths. Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country, and Australia reported their first cases.

"It's continuing to unfold in a fairly dramatic fashion in terms of how it's spreading around the globe," said Margaret Hamburg, an infectious disease expert. "The public and governmental response has certainly ratcheted up, with people staying home from work, people canceling travel plans. Some places are putting in place pretty significant public health measures such as quarantine."

In California, health officials intercepted an American Airlines flight from Tokyo with 125 passengers and 14 crewmembers aboard on the tarmac at San Jose's airport after five passengers reported symptoms similar to SARS. Health officials have been meeting every plane, boat and cargo ship arriving from Asia to remove any sick passengers and warn fellow travelers to be on the look-out for symptoms. Three of the passengers were being kept in the hospital. At least 72 suspected U.S. cases have been reported, including at least three in Virginia.

There's more but if you want to read it, click the link.

yay for Google news!

SARS is a particularly deadly strain of the cold-virus, they can't diagnose it properly because they haven't figured out the difference between it and the ordinary cold-virus that is present to some extent in every living thing. Once they have a genetic marker or something to ID it with they will be able to tell you that's what you have or not, but not necessarily cure it anymore than they can cure the common cold or influenza. Antibiotics do help as they will combat the secondary infections such as pneumonitis that actually kill the people. Studies in current victims show that those who recover have some degree of immunity, this may lead to a vaccine to prevent it. If you don't get colds than you won't get this either.

Damn it, if your going to post something like that on April Fool's day post a fucking link for it so it can be verified. I haven't watched the news lately because its been all war coverage.

An unknown disease has become one of the greatest natural disasters facing the world becuase of how frequent international travel is. I just hope things never get to the point where all international travelors are forced to wear bio suits while in another country. We need to settle our differnces, stop fighting and untie to compat disease, famine and other things that are major dangers to the entire human race.

<---- Serious thoughts, not just trying to save face!

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes,
An aeroplane - lenny bruce is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane,
Listen to yourself churn - world serves its own needs,
Don't misserve your own needs. Feed it up a knock, speed,
Grunt no, strength no. Ladder structure clatter with fear of height,
Down height. Wire in a fire, represent the seven games in a
Government for hire and a combat site. Left her, wasn't coming in
A hurry with the furies breathing down your neck.
Team by team reporters baffled, trump, tethered crop.
Look at that low plane! Fine then. Uh oh, overflow, population,
Common group, but it'll do. Save yourself, serve yourself.
World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed.
Tell me with the rapture and the reverent in the right - right.
You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light,
Feeling pretty psyched.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and i feel fine.

Six o'clock - tv hour. Don't get caught in foreign tower.
Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn.
Lock him in uniform and book burning, blood letting.
Every motive escalate. Automotive incinerate. Light a candle,
Light a motive. Step down, step down. Watch a heel crush, crush.
Uh oh, this means no fear - cavalier. Renegade and steer clear!
A tournament, a tournament, a tournament of lies. Offer me solutions,
Offer me alternatives and i decline.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and i feel fine.

The other night i tripped a nice continental drift divide.
Mount st. Edelite. Leonard bernstein. Leonid breshnev,
Lenny bruce and lester bangs. Birthday party, cheesecake,
Jelly bean, boom! You symbiotic, patriotic, slam, but neck, right?
Right.

It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it.
It's the end of the world as we know it and i feel fine...fine...

SARS is not nearly as dangerous as the already known influenza virus (causing flu) which can spread much faster and which kills hundreds of thousands of people every year.

SARS is just a big media hype probably because it is a 'new' illness for humans. The virus had been affecting only animals.

I think you and Aaron have been getting high together or something because you must be smoking something. SARS is a new illness, new as in never before seen. It's infecting humans, and I believe only humans.

UPDATE: As of April 2 (today), 2,300 were already known to be infected with the SARS virus, an increase of 700 in 3 days, of which 75 had died. 95 cases were reported in total in Signapore with over 1000 in quarantine - just one of 15 nations with cases: Canada for example had 6 deaths and over 150 cases, with 1,200 officially reported cases in China and more than 700 in Hong Kong. Other affected countries included Taiwan, France, German, Italy, Republic of Ireland, Romania, Singapore, Switzerland, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States, Viet Nam.

New Update: One more person is dead of SARS here in Canada, making it a total of 7 people dead, and over 170 people are thought to have it.

SARS is caused by variant of the corona virus which is quite common.

I'm not exactly afraid of SARS but it does warrant watching. Last time I checked, which was a couple of days ago, about 1 out of every 25 people that had it had died. It's not that serious yet because not too many people have it. That could change quickly.

Kind of strange, but I read today that Sars were found in Beijing as early as last November, the Chinese Gov't just didn't want to admit it to the WHO. (yes, the band)

For all those who say this isn't serious are smoking something. We might see this turn into something similar to the Spanish Flu pandemic. (Killed 30-40 million people worldwide in one year)

There is currently no cure or vaccine since it is such a newly discovered virus. Developing a vaccine for the virus could take up to a year, which by then could be spreading like wildfire through China due to the population density.

Make jokes about it now, but the odds of dying are pretty high. If it weren't serious, would everyone in the affected area be wearing masks?

Siskabush

No SARS in saskatchewan yet, i think.

Thats a good thing.

And the flu can be easily cured. SARS, there is no cure yet. just massive quarantines.

Has anyone ever had whooping cough, that is brutal.

I saw a person on the bus wearing a surgical-mask, similar in appearance to those that people are wearing in China. It freaked me out... I was going to ask why he was doing so, but instead gave him a wide berth. My biology teacher was saying that one of his friends had been quarantined after making a trip to China for three days, so at least the US government is doing one thing well... trying to cease the spread of a pandemic that could wipe out many across the world... Freaky... the Spanish Influenza of 1918 killed 20 million people world wide... the Bubonic plague killed 1/3 or more of the population of Europe in Medieval times... this could happen again.

Here is the latest on SARS as of 9:00 am this morning:

SARS in Canada has been pretty much enclosed to only 2 hospitals, well, a man that was staying in one of the hospitals which were hosting SARS ended up catching it. He was later released, having been told my the doctors that he no longer had it, well they were wrong, the man still had it. What happened next is shocking, the man went to his church after he was released, their were 500 people in church that day, doctors and scientist belive he may have given to SARS to no less than 2/3 of everyone there. SARS is no longer enclosed to hospitals, SARS is now in the community.

Here are the Stat's:

At the end of March there were 400 people who had SARS in the world, 22 of those people were in Canada and 4 were dead.

As of April 15th, two weks after March ended this is how it looks:

3229 people are suspected of having SARS, 139 of those live here in Canada, and 16 people have died of it here.

Thats a growth of 2829 people in 2 weeks, this could have catastrophic counsequences in the world given enough time...

EDIT: Let's hope thos BC scientist can work on a vaccine quick.

In Canada the federal goverment will need to dish out anywhere's from 10 Million to over 100 million to aid in the fight against SARS. Elsewhere, China has finally declared an all-out war on SARS. The WHO said Bejing would drastically raise its toll of people affected by SARS after agreeing to change the way it is diagnosis people with it to help stop any and all cases of it. This means the city of Bejing will no longer have 38 reported cases of SARS but a staggering 200. Now besides that the WHO is also worried that SARS may spread and become a global disease after SARS was discovered in people not linked to the main cases in Canada, because of that 450 people in Montreal and New York have been quarantined.

Here are the new stat's:

As of Good Friday the Canadian Health program has recieved reports of 304 probable/suspected cases of SARS, in Canada the total number of people dead of it is 13, in the Hong Kong area alone the death toll has hit 69.

Ontario is reporting 128 probable and 119 suspected cases.

British Columbia has reported 4 probable and 41 suspected cases.

New Brunswick is reporting just 2 suspected/

Saskatchewan has reported 1 suspected case.

Alberta has reported 5 suspected cases.

and finally P.E.I. has reported 4 suspected cases.

The WHO has reported that SARS has infected 3, 461 people and killed at least 170 people from it.
