I have created this thread for

1) Newbies to find answers to questions that have been asked before
2) For reference to try and prevent threads been duplicated...

This is very much an early version. I also intend to add a similar thread to the Grokster and Kazaa forums.

Please post additional Q&A's to add...

************************************************
QUESTIONS SPECIFIC TO KAZAA LITE:
************************************************

Q.What is KazaaLite?

A. KazaaLite is kazaa without most of the bundled software that comes with kazaa.
or as they put it...
KaZaA Lite is KaZaA, minus a few key "features":
- No Adware
- No Spyware
- No banners
- No bitratelimit for mp3 files
- No irritating websites loaded into KaZaA
- No crappy BDE Viewer
- No f*cking Bonzi Buddy
- Set up multiple users with the included PseudoTrack tool

Q. Where can it be downloaded?

A. It can be downloaded from www.kazaalite.com

Q. What is the current version?

A. 1.7.1

Q. What Adware/Spyware does Kazaa Lite remove?

A. CyDoor and the Brilliant Digital 3D Projector (sometimes referred to as B3D or BDE)

Q. I ran Ad-Aware and it picks up Cydoor in KazaaLite!!?

A. This is a dummy file. Read:
http://www.zeropaid.com/bbs/showthread.php?s=&threadid=102

Q. Is KazaaLite been sued?

A.No. Although, Sharman Networks (kazaa owners) are trying to get sites that host the software shut down.

Q. Where can I get more info on KazaaLite?

***A.There are more extensive FAQ at
http://www.geocities.com/poiuyt_1940/KLfaq.html and
http://www.kazaalite.com/nuke/modules.php?op=modload&name=FAQ&file=index

***********************************************
QUESTIONS RELATED TO ALL FASTTRACK CLIENTS
***********************************************

Q. What is FastTrack?

A. FastTrack is a very large FileSharing network.

Q. Who Created FastTrack?

A.FastTrack was created by Consumer Empowerment/Kazaa BV. Specifically Niklas Zennstrom & his team in the Netherlands. They also own the right to issue licences.

Q. What clients connect to the network?

A.Kazaa (and KazaaLite) , Grokster and iMesh. Morpheus formally connected to the network.

Q. What features does FastTrack technology have?

A.File hashing, Ultra peers/Supernodes, swarming downloads, search ID3 tags, support for all file types and much more...

Q. What is a Supernode?

Supernodes are an essential part of the network. When being a Supernode, other FastTrack users in your neighbourhood will automatically upload to your machine a small list of files they are sharing. Other people using the supernode will be able to access your files.

Q.How do you get more than 100 results when searching?

A. Read: http://www.zeropaid.com/bbs/showthread.php?s=&threadid=124

Q. How do you remove the 128k file limit?

A. Read: http://www.zeropaid.com/news/articles/auto/07182001c.php

Q. Help! I can't Connect...

A. [Some material taken from offical Grokster FAQ].

Remember that all FT clients will not work without cydoor or dummy Cydoor. Did you remove cydoor with Ad-Aware?

If you are having trouble connecting try the following in order:

1. Sometimes it can take a minute or 2 to connect: Be patient!

2. Make sure you have a good connection to the Internet and that you are using FT 1.5.1 or newer versions ...older versions may not work correctly.

3. Try Uninstalling all FT programs on your hard drive and Reinstalling the 1 you want. Remember there are 4 FT clients to try.

4. Try Uninstalling then using a FT Registry Cleaning tool like http://www.grokster.com/files/grokster_regclean.exe and then Reinstalling.

5. Make sure that you do not have a firewall type program such as ZoneAlarm or Black Ice set to block the FT client. They can be used with Grokster/Kazaa..., but do not set them so they block Grokster/Kazaa....
If you are on the Windows XP operating system:
Run your Windows Updates from your Start menu and make sure you get the Windows XP Application Compatibility Update (April 10, 2002) (Q319580). It is discussed here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q319580

6. If that does not solve the problem, then:
First, try a right click on the Start/[FT Client] button and click on the advanced button in the shortcut tab and put a tick in run with different credentials. Then click OK and OK. When you start up a FT client it says run as current user and has a tick in protect my computer and data from unauthorised program activity. Then click OK.
Second try: Windows XP has a firewall that can be enabled. When Shared Internet Connection is configured, the firewall is enabled by default. Depending on how your computer is equipped, it also may be enabled from the factory if your computantly connected to the Internet, thereby greatly increasing the chances of unauthorized intrusions to your computer.
We recommend that you use a firewall such as Zone Alarm, which has been proven to work with Grokster.

To disable the Win XP firewall, right-click My Network Places, select properties, select the connection associated with your Internet access (modem or lan connection), right-click on the selected connection, select properties, select the Advanced Tab, uncheck the box for Firewall and select Ok or Apply to save the change.

A second option for advanced users is instead of disabling the Firewall, you can manually enable the specific port(s) Grokster needs. Instructions on how to manually enable ports can be found in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. Just select Windows XP as the Product and seach for firewall. Grokster uses Port 1214.

Finally, perhaps you are behind an external firewall. If so, you will have to work around it with a proxy using port 1214. Unfortunately, if this is the problem, we cannot provide any advice as every one of these is unique. Grokster uses Port 1214. Please see your proxy software documentation on how to allow Grokster access on Port 1214. Host: s1.grokster.com, login1.grokster.com
You might also try a free product called SocksCap, which you can get at: http://www.socks.nec.com/reference/sockscap.html

More info about it is at: http://www.socks.nec.com/sockscapfaq.html

Another product that seems to work easily is HTTP-Tunnel: http://www.http-tunnel.com/HT_Products_HTTPTunnelClient.asp
Download it here.

7. Still no luck?
Check to see if there any restictions on FT clients on your network. It is possible that the FT client is being blocked or bandwidth restricted by your ISP.

8. Post here if you have tried the above with no luck!

what is file hashing, what does it do

It enables exact files to be matched up for multisource downloads and allows exact matches to be found for files to resume.

Basically...
1. Try an install/ reinstall
If no luck try...
2. Use one of the FT Registry cleaning tools
if not luck try..
3. Instaling Grokster.

and remember to give it some time to connect.

A few minutes.

Connection issues seems to be a large problem. I have added a lot of info to the FAQ above about connection issues.

I have a problem that many users have had a problem with.
First off, I'm running a Athlon XP 2000+ on a Soyo SY-k7V Dragon+ motherboard with 768MB 2100 DDR. Earthlink DSL running on OS Windows 2000 Pro.

Problem: When I'm using Grokster or KaZaA, after a few moments (2-5 minutes), my computer completely freezes. No, it does not show the blue screen or shuts down. It COMPLETELY FREEZES.
The thing is, I've up'ed my memory from 256 to 768 just recently. I've tried using MaxMem and FreeMem memory freeing programs. I've reinstalled Grokster/KaZaA many times to see if that would work.

But, nothing fixes my problem.
I have asked A+ Certified tech's for some possiable solutions, and asked others with high knowledge of computers. The Techs said that it could be my CPU Fan, CPU, motherboard or memory. I've checked those and they work perfectly. Memory wasn't the problem since I've upgraded and it still freezes.

CAN ANYONE THINK OF SOMETHING THAT COULD HELP ME PLEASE!!!???

Thanks Wiggum! KaZaA Lite rocks! I have been using it ever since I heard about it a couple of months ago. Your piece about it was very informative. Excellent idea. Fast Track has a lot of great features that KaZaA ruins with there spyware/adware/trojans. KaZaA Lite, Clean iMesh, AquaLime, Clean SongSpy & WInMX are great examples of what P2P networks can & should be. :wings

Can anyone tell me how to update Kazaa Lite? I keep getting an option to update to 1.7.1 when I start up Kazaa Lite, but I assume this is the spyware version of the program. I've found Kazaa Lite 1.7.1 through searching on the FastTrack network but I'm always a bit cautious of downloading and running .exe files because of viruses.
