Overclocking questions

Ok, I've been all over google, overclockers.com, and several other sites, but I can't find a clear guide to overclocking, all of the sites I've looked at just tell stories about how far they overclock, and the awesome cooling projects they have

I know the risks of overclocking, and I'm working on the cooling factor with my microwave case (it would be done by now if my dad and I would stick to one idea on how to cool the thing)

I've got an Athlon 1800+, in a A7S333 ASUS mb, the specs for the board are at http://www.asus.com.tw/mb/socketa/a7s333/overview.htm

This board has, Easy DIP Switch or Jumperfree™ overclocking from BIOS, Accurate 1MHz adjustments of system-bus-frequency, and Adjustable FSB/PCI/MEM ratio, its also got the ASUS COP overheating protection, which shuts the board down if it gets too hot

Now, I've bumped up the multiplier a few mhz, my processor speed went from 1.53ghz, to 1.58 (I had it to 1.61, the 1900+ level), if I take it higher I get some errors, and the ide bus shuts down giving me the blue screen of death (not the normal one, a very different one for xp hardware conflicts)

I think I'm doing something wrong, all I've changed is the fsb multiplier, its faster, noticeably (200pts in 3dmark2001, and 6pts on UD, I also get better framerates), but I'm crashing way to early, do I have to change voltages or something? I think I read somewhere I have to

Basicly, can anybody point me to a step by step guide on how to overclock an athalon? (I've allready spent a few hours messing with the clock on my video card, and I've got that screaming at the max with an 80mm fan over the card, so I know pretty well what my limits are, and some warning signs)

Also, when at normal clock speeds, under full load using UD, my CPU runs at 50-52 celcius, with the mb at about 30, is this hot? when I overclocked it 60mhz, it only went up 2 degrees (I know why my cooling sucks as of now, its a cheap case where my power supply fan sucks dirrectly against my processor fan, they're an inch apart, but my new case will fix that)

Sorry for the long post, there's just a lot of stuff I can't figure out right now, I'm hopping gorphon can help me some, but I'm sure others here have some experience in overclocking

just set your system setup right next to the fridge, it works for us poor people, I think it'll work for you too

*E* ..... I also can't believe you couldn't find anything on google, there is like a million places for that, 1800s weren't OC protected yet right? I think 2100s were the first ones to have that implemented, I may be wrong

I enjoy the thrill of it, the power is there and I just have to get to it

And I'm not asking for specific values to insert, whats the fun in that, I'm just looking for somebody to help me start, I want to learn from there

Well, I have a feeling I could do some more extreme overclocking if I had a better cooled case, I took the cover off, bumped up the ratio to 40x11.5, came out with around 1.61ghz, stable

At that speed, with the side off, it dropped 14 degrees celcius, and that was compared to a standard clock...the mb also dropped over 5 degrees

theres a program that is supposed to do it somehow, and reboots the comp if it gets too hot. ill find the name...

Its not your fault, its XP. I used to use 98SE, but decided to switch to XP. And as fast as i edited anything clockrelated, XP stoped working untill i undid my last change. That went perfectly on 98SE.

to change the electricity, you just raise the v-core on the same place where you do the rest of the oc:ing. bout the guide thingy, i think you have to search for more specific details, like how to make a volt-mod (to increase the power more than the mobo normaly supports) or how to unlock your processor (to be able to change the multiplyer).

I really doubt xp is a problem in this, at all, we're talking hardware, not software

Nasrules, I've heard of the program, but don't remember what it was called either, if you could find it...a lot of overclock sites mention it and say it gives good results

I can't figure out how to change the v-core, I would like to, but I'm still searching, may have to whip out the manual *gasp*

I've fooled Aida32 into thinking its a 1900+ processor :)

1800's are not locked, you can overclock them by changing the multiplier. My 1800 runs stably at 1.75ghz at 42 degrees celcius without any aftermarket fans or cooling etc. I also have an asus A7S333 motherboard and am running the multipier at 12.5 and the bus speed at 140mhz. I can push it a little higher but it starts to get unstable.....

Uh, thanks, I've allways wanted to learn how to reset my cmos to get into my bios screen :)

I top out around 140mhz also, but whenever I try to change the multiplier, it locks on boot and beeps a bunch, the only way to get back to the bios was to remove the batter flip some jumpers, and reboot
