I recently switched over to DSL from 56k Dailup, but I am having some problems downloading. Every single person that I attempt to download from, I get a "File/User Unavailiable" message. This just started happening when I installed the DSL. What causes this message, and how can I remedy it? Thanks!

this is what i found.

RELIABILITY FEATURES
Remove ability to disconnect users

Now users cannot disconnect you from downloading files from others. This will result in more successful downloads.

Ignore list should work both ways.

This option could decrease the chance of getting "File/user unavailable

Wow... either the problem fixed itself/went into remission or changing the timeout counter to a higher setting fixed it. I only have a few "Timed Out" and "File/User Unavailiable" messages now. Thanks guys, and I'll keep you informed if this happens again. :)

Mr Teabags, are you still having problems?

Sorry, I was browsing and found a link to my site, from aqlo's post, so, I thought I would try to post an answer, but, I may be too late...

Anyways, if you need help, just post a response or email/IM me... Quickly, you may want to play with your time out settings, which are in two places in particular, which are both fairly easy to see/find.

To quote myself:

A note about time out settings. In the settings area, there are two values that can be changed in order to hold onto users for a bit longer. There are two areas which deal with time out settings. They are: "Outgoing TCP Connections" and "Host Name Resolution", both under "Internet Connection". The higher these are set the longer it will take for the query to time out. In other words, the higher these are, the longer WinMX will attempt to connect to the user/file specified. I have mine set to 90 seconds each, however, based upon your connection, you may want to decrease these times so that you are not wasting bandwidth (such as if you are on a dial up connection).

aqlo, question for you if you see this: anything I can do to make it more clear? That is, I seem to have lost you, and would appreciate some comments/info, at your conveince about that...

Hope this helps,

~james
