I tried to connect to WinMX through the Uni's network, which I connected through using my laptop.

Anyone got any tips on how to connect to WinMX servers?

Thanx

Hi,

I connected my Laptop to one of the computer terminals in a uni computer lab, I correctly configured the IP address, subnet, default gateway address and the DNS address.

The Uni's network goes through a firewall proxy, which I entered the proxy address with authenticaqted username and password.

I can surf the net and download fine, I can Telnet and FTP fine, So that part works.

However it appears as if the network admin had blocked port 1214 from all incomming whatever data, so I can't access localhost:1214

That means I can't use any filesharing programs like WinMX and KaZaA or even ICQ won't work.

Anyone got any ideas how to route my traffic through another port? Because I think port 1214 is blocked.

You can try using a program called port detective (http://www.portdetective.com/) to see what ports of yours are open. Try some high number ports. Then go in your WinMX settings and set your incoming TCP connections to that port.

This port detective program should be tested with your applications off. Otherwise It will show the port as being in use even if it is blocked.

Hi,

Unfortunately port dectective can't configure itself to go around firewall proxy .

But I have managed to find a solution to connect to WInMX and KaZaA via corporate LAN/WANs that are restricted to web surfing only.

I've managed to divert all incomming data to http port 80 and 81, so things are all cool now:)

I've managed to get WInMX working, but I think it's quite terrible compared to KaZaA!

Cheers,

If it helps, kazaa's port number can be changed

www.k-lite.tk get the latest version, and it will have the option to change the port
