video problems

well i reinstalled windows over a week ago, and since then, i have had trouble with my video. i installed the KL codec pack 2.0 and it played all my vids. no prob right? wrong. whenever i put it at full screen, i drop frames like no tomarrow. with 'the core player' (what i used before i reinstalled), i lost over 600 of the approx. 900 frames i played of "the matrix" at full screen, whereas before i reinstalled i dropped none. im sure most of you can understand why i'd be upset.... you cant watch a movie that looses 2 out of every three frames.

specs:
intel celeron 766
512mb sdram
64mb geforce 4 mx 440 pci (i even overclocked it to over 300mhz, and it still looses 2/3 frames)
1280x1024x32 (note: i tried lowering this, and it didn't help substantially)

is there anything i can do?

Check the decoder settings...if "Post processing" or "quality" are jacked up to 4 or more depending on the codec...you may be in trouble with that Celeron.

Try dropping 'em back to 1 or so...also

Type in "Mplayer2" in the run box...try using WMP 6.4 to run the stuff....

nope... neither worked. i have tried 6.4 before, and i didnt like it as much, but either way, it had the same problem as every other vid player since i reinstalled.

as for the postprocessing and stuff, i had it at max, then i turned it down to the min and it didnt seem to make a lick of difference. note that before my last reinstall, i was able to play these movies at full postprocessing and decubing etc...

Hmmm....2 more things..

Check the system monitor to see what's hogging all these fuckin' cycles lol (I've had K++ running on auto search and downloading off 20 some people all at once while encoding some mp3's from CD and I still managed to get more then double the 29fps standard....and that's with Xvid/Divx4 and AC3 tracks...so something is hogging on yours...must be...)

Try removing the Nimo pack if you installed it along with the Kazaa codec pack...and install the ones you need on their own. Stay away from packs...Nimo is trash! The freakin' thing screws up everything lol

If you have any movies with AC3 for the sound track try using AC3 Filter in place of the crap that Nimo comes with.

Edit: Have you tried using WMP8? You may need to select "Full screen mode switching" since it's just overlay when you don't....that's slowed down many an old system of mine.

its odd... i have 'the core player' set to a priority of "high" and it takup ~90% of the cycles and STILL drops frames like hell.

as for the codecs, i had both of the mentioned packs installed... i removed them and am now in the process of individually getting the codecs i need.

the video overlay shouldn't make that much of a difference... ive ran videos before w/o any problems... its got to be somthing other than 'there's just not enough power', as ive done it before with this exact (hardware) setup. also, my videogames seem to work flawlessly, especially with the OCed video card.

edit: even w/o nimo or KL codec pack, im still dropping frames.

How about the video card drivers? Are they the exact same build as the previous ones?

I've had that problem with ATi cards....certain newer drivers caused major refresh slow down and made all my video watching (mpeg1/2 Divx ect) choppy as hell...not CPU hogging though.

I'm pretty sure it's the codecs....Nimo is the bastard hell spawn of Satan....

Edit: Hmmm.....is everything exactly the same? Same OS? Did you forget to install SP1 if your on XP? Video was choppy as hell as well as boot up times being slow before SP1.....

its funny you should ask about video drivers... ive TRIED installing newer drivers, but no matter what i do, they always stay the same. the only thing i can think of doing would be to uninstall the card, take it out of the PC, install the new drivers, then put the card back in.

hmm... sp1.... does windows auto-update install that? because i know i had that before, but i have not gone to microsoft.com and downloaded sp1, however i have done numerous updates that 'pop up' from my taskbar....

Make sure your chipset drivers ARE installed. Then make sure your AGP and video drivers are current.

Without the chipset drivers, your DMA will not work properly, and you will have thruput problems.

Then, go back to the basics. uninstall all of your codecs, and start with the most nominal Nimo and the Alph Direct show filter.


wonderboy2005 dont get the service pack from microsoft. You need to focus on turning off the services that you dont need, and those Auto Update features.

krell, you may be right with the chipset drivers. unless for some reason the upgrade version of winxp home would have those drivers, they most likely are not on my computer. however, i cannot get them from HPs site.... they have a very limited amount of drivers, and since i did a complete reinstall, the 'system recovery' cds that came with my pc dont recognize my pc as a HP, so they wont allow me to do anything. unless you know of some place i can obtain these drivers, i am between a rock and a hard place.

why shouldn't i get sp1 though? what harm will it do?

edit: i have somehow (god knows how w/ how shitty HPs site is) come accross all the info i need about my computer.
the chipset is an intel 810 on a trigem motherboard. i looked for drivers for this and found them, but it says on intel's site that they are for developers only. and that if i wanted to use them, i should go to my manufacurers site and get them there. but like i stated above, there arent any at HPs site. so should i just use these?

Get the Aida32 util, then you will see everything that you need ! no kidding

Yore s smart guy, im sure you can figure it out from there.

If you have an Intel chipset, go to Intel, if you have AMD, go there.
VIA, go there.

In any case, 95% of the questions like this you guys ask can be answered with Aida32.

nope... they didn't do the trick either. i tried installing the drivers, but the program said "the current OS already supports this chipset" and then just quits out of the install. i did however get to install the other thing you suggested, but that did not do the trick.

im going to download SP1 now. i had it when the vid did work properly, and i figure i need it anyway.

well as you might have guessed, SP1 did nothing for the video problem. anything else you can think of that might help?

Try removing ALL mpeg4 based codecs...then run Nimo's installer....

ONLY select "FFDirectshow" filter.

It will handle Xvid/Divx3/4/(partial support for 5 in the pack I used) and any other Mpeg4 based codecs...

DO NOT install the single codecs...just directshow.

I'm freakin' lost as to what it is exactly but play around a bit.

I've had trouble with this method...but you can give it a try.

In 95/98/ME just hit up the control panel and the multimedia icon...then go to the A/V tab and you should see all your codecs. You can remove 'em there.

In XP just right click my computer and go to devices...then to Multimedia and click on "Video" you can remove 'em from there.

Also, in ME/98/95 you can delete the acm/ax/dll file and remove the link from "Drivers32" in system.ini but that's only if the other way doesn't work....sorta like fuckin' with the reg...you win some ya lose some lol

c)(tried) reinstalling drivers

e)installed directx 9
f)reinstalled drivers

yey. im soo happy, and gta3 works to boot! (it didn't before)
