Often, when I'm using my computer now, and try to "Search" for example, the taskbar disappears and reappears. Some of the icons have disappeared ex. Evidence Eliminator and Diet Kaza. This is a brand new problem. Why is Windows XP doing this to me? I am using the latest version. I also have NIS/NAV 2003, and use Ad-Aware/Spybot SD. Would overinstalling SP1 fix this problem?

This is a hicup in Explorer.exe.

I know that it pukes out, and your problem is a result. How to make it not "puke out" is beyond me. Exactly what it is about your system that makes it puke out is also unknown.

I would like for you to close all programs, and reinstall SP1.

After you reboot, some of the services you had disabled will be reenabled etc. Before you use any 3rd party utils, (Evidence Eliminator) etc, please let us know if your problems persists.

Rebuild the icon cache with TweakUi, which is free from microsoft.com. This should fix the bug introduced into explorer by some installed app.

Won't installing SP1 over my current setup just update system files and my installed programs will be left unaffected? I would like that very much, but what are the chances that an overinstall will solve this problem?

yes u r correct. i think krells means for u to see whether things work ok before running any 3rd party apps. the chances of this working are good because krell suggested it. even he isn't omniscient though:hole

PS don't u just love that word:wings

hehe yes I am reminded of that almost daily.

What I was proposing was, that sometime 3rd party utilities will either delete a file that you need, such as the cache that -glitch- mentioned, or some apps that you install just replace a common or shared file, or sometimes when you uninstall, you take a file to its grave unintentionally. Service Pack 1 is the next best thing to a reinstall. Watch the files as it unpacks and installs.

Also, . . I am prompting you to take some initiative. I trash 2 system a week on the average. What I am looking for is someone to think ahead, and do some research, then test a hypothesis. Of course there are no garantees, but this was proactive, and not very risky.

Also, learn to view your Event Logs, to see whats happening to your system. You can find them under Control Panel > Administration Tools.
