I have heard Rumors of mp4. i was wondering if anyone else had heard anything as well. Supposedly it's supposed to be more compressed than mp3 and give better audio quaility. If this is true heh think of what kind of wrench that would throw into the RIAA's plans. :cross

by what I understand mpeg4 is a new VIDEO compression, and that divx ;) is no longer gpl so they are developing a standard called vicd or something to that effect

mpeg4 is, in fact, a video format. Although, there are supposedly audio formats with better compression than mp3 (MP3Pro, Ogg Vorbis, WMA) but none of them are significantly better than mp3, and because of that, mp3 isnt going to stop being the dominant audio format anytime soon.

there is a mpeg4 audio codec. it's called AAC. it's decent but there is no way some one can fit 800 hours of music on a CD.
1hour and 10 minutes per megabyte
37minutes per 500k
18 per 250
9 per 125
4.5 per 62.5
2.25 per 31.25
1.125 per 16k
.55 per 8

actually it is possible. there are some new cd formats that can hold a ton more information than just 700mb. i think they were called dvd-audio and superaudio-cd or something like that.

yeah he did mention it was a combination player and that it sopported dvd, so he could easily use a dvd disc and get huge amounts of music on it.

good point Ricio.
i did some more research and i was wrong, mpeg4 is not only a video format but also an audio one. although i doubt you can fit 800 hours in 750 mb.
Though it sure would be cool to fit 15 seconds into a kilobyte :-p

i think i would rather go with ogg files....i have heard mp3pro files suck ass but so far with ogg i have had great results....ripped a 128kbs ogg file and it sounded just as good if not better than a 192kbs mp3 so yeah everything i rip now is in ogg format...also a big plus on the ogg format is the relatively small size of the files

If you think thats nice Toolkid, wait for the later 1.x versions of OGG. Even better sound quality coming in through the extensive tuning of psychoacoustics and the filesize is going to be SLIGHTLY smaller than before, plus, major bugs will be fixed, so every kind of sound file will be encoded perfectly.
By the way, compare a 128k mp3 to a 64k Ogg
You'll find that the 128k ogg will slowly become THE standard on the file sharing scene.:fire

Also, don't forget to update your Winamp with the latest Ogg Vorbis and Directsound output plugins from Nullsoft::fire
