Can your IP address be found using WinMX

Is it possible to have your IP address logged when you are using WinMX, I know its easy on the ICQ types, but on a decentralized network????

You can find people's IPs on any network out their. All you have to do is open the command window and type in netstat and voila.

Every computer you are connected to can read your IP address. This includes websites as well. For example, when you connect to google.com you are connecting to a computer with an IP address of 216.239.51.99 on its port 80. See here:

With WinMX, if you are running as a primary user then a lot of people will be connected to you. If you are running as a secondary user then only the primary user and anyone who is downloading or uploading with you can read your IP address. On "opennap" servers, the administrators of the servers can find out your IP address without being connected to you, but the regular person can't. I don't know if WinMX has such an administrative function.

Chances are that if someone finds out your IP address, then you have little to worry about, except that they would then be able to narrow you down to a region of the planet and would know who your ISP is. Only your ISP knows who you are by way of your IP address, and if they are a good one such as Verizon, then they won't give out such information unless they have a court order forcing them to do so.

Whenever you upload/download, traffic is coming and going. Do a NETSTAT -AN via your DOS COMMAND while you are connected (either upload/download) and you will see the IP's of those who you are connected to.

You should go into any search engine and look into PROXIES and PROXIE ADDRESSES.

There are some where you can't like freenet or invisible irc, but I guess that's about it.

OK, so your IP can be read even on a decentralized network, so, if you want to share and not be caught by the file sharing nazis, how do you hide yourself? Obviously, there have been a few sharers prosecuted, Ive read the stories here, so IP's do participate with the cops, and with the RIAAs push to prosecute people uploading, is there a simple solution to anonymity?

IP address is such a fundamental part of internetworking that hiding it is not just a trivial trick. Think about regular post, how do you deliver the mail without knowing the address? I would suggest supporting networks that are doing research to address this problem even though they very likely are not the fastest and easiest ones to use.

Your profile says you are located in Finland, so you dont have the legal concerns like we do in th USA, where even our federal government has called P2P sharers criminals, helping international terrorists, etc, etc. And granted, right now our government is concerned with Iraqi terrorists in hiding, so prosecution of file sharers may not be the top priority, as we ready for war.

However, rust never sleeps, eventually, prosecution will become more common, and I would like to prepare for that, government will only become more intrusive, especially as improving technology makes gathering information easier.

I see anonymous file sharing as the most critical issue facing the continuation of our freedom to share, again, this may not be the top priority of people in other countries.

All it takes is a one letter or email from your American media company to my Finnish ISP and my account is terminated. I've seen that happen and it ain't a pretty sight.... You would think to be safe when you live on the other side of the globe but no. I still have some benefits like the fact that downloading is legal.
