I am going to build my own OS. However I need to know some ideas for names. Plus I want some ideas of what people want in it if people are going to like it.I also might need people to help me out not really but I don't know I will see about that later. But for now it's only in Alpha Stages I will post the site when I have one. So post your comments and suggestions. Thanks

Take a free open-sourced Unix version like Linux™ and change the little logo to be your own. Call it Dragoonix.

Can I have some Freedom™ Fries with that?

lol,

that would be funny but no. I prefer to make my own OS. Does anyone know where I can get a free web-site for my OS?
and I need any suggestions for stuff. Or if you want to help in anyway just ask tell me what you want to help me with and I will tell you if you can.

Get a free website for your new OS at Brinkster™.com (http://brinkster.com/), they don't have any ads and they will allow you to use ASP (http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/98/39/index2a.html?tw=programming).

Try starting out by just building your own browser (http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/programming/javascript/tutorials/tutorial1.html).

Learn more about how to scam people and what's really going on right here (http://www.zeropaid.com/bbs/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6409).

not to knock you down or anything dude, but in order to compete today wouldn't you need like a team of programers or something, unless you're a genius in which case you can just disregard my question

I took the time 2 look this up cause i remembered that MoonMan took the time 2 build a little free webhost chart.

http://www.angelfire.lycos.com/
Free webhost provides 1 gig of bandwidth (data transfer) a month and others 20 megabytes of storage.
Bad Points - ads, but it lets you choose what kind and if you want a banner and 1 pop up, or 2 pop ups when you enter the page and 1 every time you click around.
Good points - VERY easy access to altering pages, offers browser ftp (you can upload on a webpage), regular ftp access, tons of tutorials and a friendly enviorment. It's what I first used

www.Geocities.com
Geocities is another big free web host and has some easy steps to making a 1 2 3 done page. Nothing special but it can start you out.
Bad Points - It's geoshitties. Geocities also doesn't support ftp access and it has that dynamic ad that is very fucking irriating. Limited bandwidth, ads, just plain annoying to upload pages.
Good points - Easy for beginners, free guestbooks, daily bandwidth limitations as opposed to monthly (that could be viewed as a bad point too).

www.FreeWebz.com
Nice webhost with no ads.
Bad Points - Very limited bandwidth, sumwhat confusing website interface.
Good points - NO ADS, cgi dns and ftp options, easy to implement counters and guestbooks, 100 megs of webspace, other things. An all around good host.

www.Web1000.com
No ads and easy sign up (no fucking catches like some of these others).
Bad Points - Mainly a PORN provider so if you type in the url wrong (ie: someone.web1000.com instead of somebody.web1000.com) you could end up at a site compused of penis pictures and fat old ladies... use caution. I was emailed a few days ago saying ads were going to be placed on the sites now (I use this provider fyi) but I haven't seen it and I recieved that email a while back.
Good points - NO ADS, ftp support, free forum, lots of webspace, UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH, etc etc.

Free domains

www.dot.tk
Very nice free domain with no catches
Bad Points - You have to wait something like 72 hours for it to be approved. Also, .tk address can be extremely slow sometimes and have some annoying dns errors (sometimes www.yoursite.tk is slower than yoursite.tk). Also you have to have something like 30 hits within 90 days so your domain isnt unregistered. Another thing, someone can buy a free domain right under you so make sure you don't register something TOO popular (ie: pokemon.tk).
Good points - VERY easy URL for people to remember, gives a more professional look, your account at dot.tk monitors your hits so its cool to check out, no ads (prior to what people think, you CAN turn them off on your user control panel at the site).

www.kickme.to
Another good site to shorten your URL.
Bad Points - URL may not work sometimes but it is usually reliable, you have to sign up for some stupid news letters (give a bogus email)
Good points - AD FREE, easy to sign up, fast

www.cjb.net
Easy to remember, reliable
Bad Points - A nasty pop up that covers the screen.
Good points - Easy, free, and reliable. Hardly ever goes down as opposed to the other two.

>Does anyone know where I can get a free web-site for my OS?
If it is going to be open source then sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net)

>I need any suggestions for stuff.
Take a look at the Reactos project, they are trying to make
a free clone of windows NT. If they can clone the driver
interfaces then it might just get somewhere in a few years.

There are half a dozen PC OS's on the web written by
individuals.
The resources needed to write drivers for hundreds of
different video/network/scsi/sound cards, the standards
association fees for the plug-n-play monitor system, VESA
etc, and the complexity of USB means that the one-floppy
written in assembler OS's generally support unaccelerated
VESA graphics modes only, a serial mouse, IDE disks
and thats about it.

How about making a hard-real-time OS for embedded use.
For embedded stuff, like controlling bottle top making
machines, engineers use dedicated boards from the likes
of Arcom (http://www.arcom.com/) with DOS,
linux or QNX. You don't need to support a huge varitity
of hardware, just serial ports really.

If windows has a brain spasm and descides to stop respond
for a few seconds then you have chicken quarters flying off
the end of the conveyor belt or the smell of burning plastic
in the air. There is a nuclear power station not a million
miles from me where some fairly important systems are
controlled from a win95 machine, they actually have two
win95 machines, a hardware watch dog and a relay that
changes between machines when they crash.

How about you go to China and get the source code that Bill Gates revealed to them, and make a Windows Clone, except make it a lot better!

Source code for microsoft operating systems has been doing the rounds for years. Anything based on it isn't legal so you might as well pirate windows.

If you want a windows compatiible OS then help the wine project. The project deseratly needs an automated test system.

This guy just won't stop
He keeps coming back trying to fool us into thinking it's someone else.. each time he thinks of a new thing:
1. P2P program
2. OS

Hey a buddy of mine makes his own OS'es too!
He allready has like 3 home-made Os'es, and they're pretty good! Graphical interface and all. And he's only 14 and a total idiot.

So I figure, it can't be that difficult.

Check the other thread on creating a P2P app......I called Homeya's butt out days ago...lol

*Starts insane ramblings*

DOGSTER XP HOMEYA VERSION!

IT'S DOG-TESTICLE-TASTIC!

With DOGSTER XP you can now enjoy using your PC on a completely different level! BSOD is totally like not there!

In place of BSOD Homeya has created the loveable DOGSTER who goes by the name of 'The testicle licking dog formally known as DOGSTER' who pops up in all his low res bmp loveliness and stares you down till you reboot....then pops up with a kick ass DOG (Dos in Dogster speak) screen that says "If an OS is never created...by an AOL using....fuckwitt...does VB -- = _+ make for a good P2P program?" Then promptly switches to the same crappy DOGSTER symbol and prints... "i ned hepl fishing dis op sis plz hlep me!?!? : ( :(:(:(:((:(:(//////asidhsaoifdgs"

*Ends insane rambling*

Have I lost it yet? I donno....I had something with grandeur in my head...didn't come out right...bah...DOGSTER is still to freakin' funny. I'm still laughing at the crap I just typed up....hope ya'll had a good laugh too.

darn, i had the chance to call this a hoax last nite, but was too tired.

anybody who has to think of a name for an os obviously isn't putting much time in it. i mean, how long do you think it took microsoft to come up with 'windows'?

or apple to come up with mac os?

duh...

but about free webspace:
www.portland.co.uk

php, cgi, blah blah blah. i dont remember all the specifics. but no ads.

method77: i provide a link bc i dont care if he uses it, i think anyone looking for free website hosting should go there and look at it.

Sorry guys about comming up with more ideas but being the only one making the thing just gives me more ideas but I will try to stick with this one. But if you would like to help if you are a programmer that would be great. :D:

You are probably new here, or *whatever*, the point is, if you really need help, then i suggest you follow the advice up above.

seems like someone said you were spamming. I use to spam when ever I got pissed or something. I realize it was dum and I was wasting my time. You want to spam, spam in the sexy spam thread.

I suggest you also find something else to do, because really no one is really going to pay attention to you. They are going to ignore you, laugh at you and continue to ban you. Think about it, there are other important things to do.
I used to get bored as well, and then I found other stuff to occupy my time.
Here are some things to do if you are bored. Do p2p filesharing, play games.
go to this site www.addictinggames.com its fun and its free
read comics on line
learn html
read poetry write poetry
write rap
And if you do have some good links post them here, but like I said, u asking questions and seeking attention, or whatever is not going to do you any good.

like i said do something else.
when all else fails, try again.
hell I am bored right now, should I spam.
no, instead i will find something better to do.

*this isnt flaming u* just giving you choices on what you can do if you feel if you bored or whatever.

Thank you very much for posting that. That was one of the funniest things i've ever read. Between CJ's "U need to find help" and the other guy and his botching of the English language in an even worse manner, I found myself rolling on the floor laughing(ROFL). I kinda wish the last guy on the page had not posted. They could have had a botched English thread all to themselves.

hey i never said I believed him I just posted a list of free webhost that MonMan created, Yes i fixed the damn That was a great list of links musikbeatz and moonman, and I probably should have sent him to angelfire myself (it has webmonkey built right in) but I'm really proud of the fact that brinkster still has no ads even though they let you do active server pages (thats visual basic for the 'net, good stuff)

So what kind of comics do you guys like?

First things first

C# is out of the question so it C++ you would have to use asm... but not only asm you would have to use x86 asm.

Driver backbone is another problem
Multitasking process API
you have your whole standerzation level
Under that your have memory access and Paging system
with that you have your Diskcontrol Driver along with its memory system access driver

Unless your a kick ass asm writer just dreaming of these task could take you months. if you don't think about them it will turn out like the dos kernal for Win95-98 (it will majoryly suck) event he XP -2000 kernal sucks major flaws in its system. and it takes 8000 microsoft employees to keep that os up.

Next...

If your really trullly going to write an os. first: use existng code. modify it and such.

.next Write and OO OS or come up with a new method of organizing code.

.next write fragmented lowlevel code that you can reuse and figure a way of storing your code in a base level system. maybe your OS could be just that a code execution layer like the .net framework only 100% native to the machine.

these are my ideas. enjoy. email me if you either want a question answerd or want to talk.

later
and good luck

If you're looking for a web host head over to Freewebspace.net (http://freewebspace.net/search/power.shtml), they have a database of 350 free web hosting providers. If the web hosts posted in this thread are not suitable, freewebspace.net is bound to have a host you would like.

Anyways if you're serious about making an x86 OS I recommend The IA-32 Intel® Architecture Software Developer’s Manual, Volume 3: System Programming Guide (http://www.intel.com/design/pentium4/manuals/245472.htm), as well as the other two volumes for an introduction and reference to the x86 instruction set. The manual is available for download as PDF but you can also purchase it in book form and have it mailed at no charge (thats what I did). In any case, Intel is the most authoritive source on the x86 architecture so you should learn everything you need to know about how an OS can control the CPU (protected-mode, segments, paging, etc.) Good luck!

I see nothing wrong in wanting to make your own OS even if your a bigginer! :) I'm 12 and making my own os..
I recommend you to make a free-dos distribution, because All drivers are included and 100% compatibility with dos progs... If you have problems you can contact me at [email protected] for a big explanation(it's reaaaaaaaaaaly simple :D) or I can send my pascal code when I finish... :D
ps: i don't care if you make me stupid

Let's see, the last post was 5 years ago. The original poster was banned under that name and many others, though he remains a great contributor of what they use for humor in the Phillipines to this site, to this very day. The actual concept was just another off-the-wall opportunity to post some links for the klicks and a bit of disinformation / satire for the teams. And zeropaid has long since moved on from nonsense like peer-to-peer to become a peeing-in-the-shower and body-noise theme site.

SO OF COURSE IT'S STILL ACTIVE !!! IT"S CRAP, BUT IT'S CLASSIC CRAP !!!

Under Daiye (1089-1169, a disciple of Yengo), the great Zen master of the Sung dynasty, there was a monk named Doken, who had spent many years in the study of Zen, but who had not as yet uncovered its secrets, if there were any. He was quite discouraged when he was sent on the errand to a distant city. A trip requiring half a year to finish would be a hindrance rather than help to his study. Sogen, one of his fellow-students, was most sympathetic and said, "I will accompany you on the trip and do all I can for you; there is no reason why you cannot go on with your meditation even while travelling". One evening Doken despairingly implored his friend to assist him in the solution of the mystery of life. The friend said, "I am willing to help you in every way I can, but there are some things in which I cannot be of any help to you; these you must look after for yourself". Doken expressed the desire to know what these things were. Said the friend: "For instance, when you are hungry or thirsty, my eating of food or drinking will not fill your stomach; you must eat and drink for yourself. When you want to respond to the calls of nature you must take care of yourself, for I cannot be of any use to you. And then it will be nobody else but yourself that will carry your body along this highway". This friendly counsel at once opened the mind of the truth-seeking monk, who was so transported with his discovery that he did not know how to express his joy. Sogen said that his work was now done and that his further companionship would have no meaning after this; so he left Doken to continue his journey all by himself. After a half year Doken returned to his own monastery. Daiye, on his way down the mountains, happened to meet Doken and at once made the following remark, "This time he knows all". What was it, let me ask, that flashed through Doken's mind when his friend Sogen gave him such matter-of-fact advice?
