I have a problem and need help.
Is it possible for a virus/hacker/ or anything else to leave temp files saying you visited a site and not leave cookies, but then when you restart the PC, some of the temps disappear?
My wife found some "bad" temp files "saying someone visited some "dirty" sites, yet noone knows how/if this happened.
When she restarted the PC, some disappeared and other temps stayed. I've got some answers, but to help I'd appreciated all comments.
System:
PC generic and old
DSL connection
Previously NO antivirus; Now McAfee Pro
Minimum HD / Extremely low ram
I'm just concerned about this "phenom....."

Are you sure you aren't the one going to those "dirty" sites? lol
But some sites don't even bother with cookies, you just visit them, Windows stores temp files from that site, and keeps a list of sites you visit, in a small file.. if i remember correctly.
And i do think that when you restart your computer, some cookies/temp files do "disappear"

That's a major problem.....she thinks is was me........I'm hopeing to prove to her that I didn't and that I'm not a closet "perv", no offense to anyone....LOL......
We have children, and we don't want them surfing that stuff, especially the "times" that the temp files report that someone was there.
Is it possible for widows to say it visited there even though no one surf there?

No, Windows can't log anything that someone didn't visit!

it could be they were pop ups advertising porn from 'legitimate' sites you had visited, but you would probably have noticed is they were.
how old are your children?

try right clicking on the cookie or temp file, if you still have them, and itll tell you when they were created, should give you more of a clue who had access to the computer
but methinks you really wanted someone to say that it could have been a virus so you could show the post to your wife to try and prove your innocence.......

There aren't any real viruses that send you to porn or make it look like you been there. There are scripts used by sites that get paid to send you to pornsites however. These scripts sometimes work very unobtrusively, creating a window in the background that paints pornos and casinos and so on every few seconds.
Let's say you visited a hacks or warez site, I'm quite certain I could find porn in your cache after that, even though in some cases you wouldn't even know it.
Imagine getting divorced over some pics you didn't even get to see, that's sad. Also, children are curious regardless of age, don't underestimate their little brains.

It may be because you are not the Administrator on that machine, and its to keep your grubby little hands off of it, cuz if you screw it up, the IT guy has to come over and yell " M O V E " so he can fix it.
Best thing to do is let your IT people and help desk handle it, and not try to undermine what they do with advice from here.

If your looking to clear your trax after to surf go to this site http://www.webroot.com/wb/products/windowwasher/index.php
and download Window Washer. Not only will it clear your cache and your temp files, but it will restore much needed hard drive space.
And perhaps Surf Nanny to keep your 5 year old from visiting those porn sites.

I had this problem when i started p2p. What program are you using? It happened to me when i was using bearshare and limewire. but that was before i knew anything about adware and spyware. Now i use klyte++ and shareza and dc++ and have no problems. My wife found the same type of stuff on mine and i showed her that it was popping up from no where. i went in and deleted them then restarted the computer in front of her and they were back in there. i unistalled bearshare and wiped out the temp internet files and folders restarted and it was gone.
