Trading with an autoresponder

Here's a little story:

I had a guy in my queue that wanted to trade. Ok, I browse through his files, see he has something I'd like to download, start him and put myself in the queue of him.

I wait a short time, realize he doesn't start my download, so I write him a message.

I get an autoresponder message back, saying it's currently night over there, he's sleeping etc.

Ahem.

I cancel his download and ban him, to see if he reacts by cancelling me too.

A while after, he starts my download (perhaps I didn't wait long enough). I unban him and wait until he appears in my queue again, since I can't message him.

He reappears, I start his download. I'm happy, hopefully he's too.

Again a while after, I get a message from him asking if "I'm satisfied with the download speed".

I get all confused since he still has his autoresponder on and I can't reply to him.

After 15 min. he finally sends me a message that he "didn't have a clue why the autoresponder was on".

Remember kids:
Always turn off your autoresponder if you want to trade.

Were not kids, and were not manipulative little pricks either. We dont play that "start me or I will cancel you" bullshit.

All the trading and cancelling others to give preference to trades is what killed Winmx. Auto responders had no effect on my ability to get over 250 on Winmx alone in the past year. I really dont give a shit who has an auto responder or not.

I assume you mean 250 videos Krell? Or What? 250 anything isn't that amazing unless it's ISOs. I've downloaded nearly 2,000 videos on Kazaa in the last 6 months and I'm not even trying.

Movies, I scarfed over 250 movies off Winmx alone.
(AND over 100 concerts and full albums)

And I did it, without cancelling people to get their attention, or bumping them for not starting me. I did it, because I learned to use it, and was resourceful.

I was waiting for Krell to reply on this one, also you can bet the movies were not cams. Also I use the auto responder mostly to give someone a laugh if I am not sitting right on top of the pc.

I strongly disagree here. I have some good friends on winmx and we "trade" all the time. but its people who share interests in similar shows I watch and who help support the network. I DO get irate at some people who all they do is message for trades. I share all my stuff freely and trading is not the norm for me. 90% of the time im sharing freely

I dont do cams, and A LOT of my movies are 2 CD sets, so in reality, I have downloaded more than 300 CDs worth. All together, maybe 500 full Cds.

Yes, but you cant offset the 90% of assholes that trade only. We all trade some, and its possible that you and I have traded, but its the others that kill it.

cancelling other's downloads is needed if u ever wanted to get their stuff. once i was grabbing a 1.3Gb ISO and the other guy was grabbing a 1.5Gb ISO from me. i finished about 1Gig and suddenly i see mine gets disconnected. i messaged the guy but he never replied. i thought he was sleeping(he was a jap) so i didn't bother cancel his downloads and let him finish. Guess what, i never seen that guy again and there goes my wasted 1Gb of incomplete file. i did manage to get it complete later however this time i did the trade the smarter way: i made sure the other guy will never get my stuff until i gets his stuff at the same time.

From your post it seems you asume I'm one of those guys that cancel every non-trader?

Well, I'm not one of those. I have 2-3 upload slots open, but when I get the opportunity to get a file I want faster by trading, I open another slot. All the other people are kept in my queue.

I don't like people only trading, I think
that if two people both have long queues and they want files from each other then trading is reasonable behaviour.

A significant percentage of the winmx population are leechers. The whole network is kept going by the people who upload more than they download. A bit of trading keeps those people interested and helps the network as a whole by spreading rare files.

Emule trades automatically. It keeps track of who has uploaded to you in the past. People who sent you more bytes than you have got from them get an upload slot sooner. It's fairer than trading based on what you want at that moment.

See, this is why i HATE, LOATHE, DESPISE, Networks such as Direct Connect (No offense to anyone who uses it, i know there is a shitload of content on that network), FileTopia (I actually use that one, even though i hate it)

Is the trading/begging for slots, getting cancelled if your slots hapen to be full, and you are downloading from someone, they see you have something they want, and play the 5 year old GIMME GIMME or i will cancell you. Having to play all nice to get files, be their "Friend" UGHH

I have said it before, I want cold impersonal filetrading with no bullshit, not having to act nice, and i really dont care who i am downloading from.

Dont get me wrong, I do enjoy community based networks, Like Filetopia, but my primary purpose for going to filetopia isnt so much for file trading, it is for information, chat, and dropping in to say hello to a couple of friends.

Well Psilaxs I whole heartedly agree, I never chat on any P2P, and the occassional "is that real or a screener" doesnt bother me.

I use DC++ pretty much exclusively now, and I never have anyone beg or barter. Maybe twice have I ever ever had anyone if I will open another slot. It is just no comparison to Winmx.

Since DC++ is the only DC client that I have used, the validity of my experience is limited to just that, DC++.

The only issue I have with DC++, and its a small one, is that as I sign on to hubs, the first one gets MOST of my upload slots, leaving little or none for others. So if the "Swedish Bikini Tream" hub has 8 of my 12 slots, I have a problem with that. I will balance the load if need be.

you've got one of the most beefy (beefiest?) connections on winmx...as in, not dialup...so YES, you can afford to SHARE with EVERYONE no matter whether or not they have files you WANT, because more than likeLY (heh heh, capitalizing is fun) they aren't the only person who has the file.

I agree with cpugenius. We dialup users don't get the satisfaction of a Primary Connection to the network, much less respectable download speeds. You bet I'd love to have a DSL connection, cable connection, etc. but there's a little issue called "priority" that gets in the way.

Traders were the people who KILLED the Winmx network.. they are the ones that produce all these stupid queues by trading and trading ONLY..
You would say leeches kill the network? Traders are leeches! They get their god damn file and than TRADE it instead of (mostly happens not all traders are like this) allowing people to download it from them..

I hate most of the traders on winmx and if one asks me if I want to trade and I browse the mofo and see he has 1 slot open on a dsl, cable etc. connection (sharing hunders of files with ZERO uploads) I laugh and cancel his/her ass...

trust me or not slow DSL ain't that friendly at WinMX at all

maybe it's prolly becuz my ISP(Bell Sympatico) is fucked up or not i don't know. i can only give out 15k ul AT MOST. ppl with fast Cable/DSL refuse to trade with me cuz i only give them 15k. they say they expect at least 30-60k. when T3 trades with each other they get in measures of MEGABYTEs, 5Gb ISO trades between them takes less than an hour.

OK, so some of you trade exclusively and some don't. I don't mind trading, but many traders lack patience and that bothers me. I think the levels of traders in the last six months have gone down on winmx and I am glad. Now I can just select something to download and it downloads with out me having to cut deals. The queues are long. granted but that should be fixed in the next release.
