Rockstar have updated the original GTA for use on 2k/XP and modern hardware AND made it free. their own downloads section is completely unobtainable at the moment but u can find servers mirroring the game here (http://www.gamershell.com/download_1506.shtml)
didn't know where else to put this so i thought this forum was as good as any. enjoy.

i'm glad u all like it. btw i'd recommend using an FTPclient so that u can resume the downloads. a necessary feature if ur on 56k like me. i'd recommend cuteFTP but i know there are many other apps around.

What the fuck? Why is it over 300 megs? It used to be (maybe still is) on that freeloader.com scam of a site. This was allegedly legal because Rockstar Games sold the distribution rights to freeloader.com and they offered the game for "free" in exchange for you clicking about a thousand banner ads, plus they imbedded ads into the actual game. I got GTA London from same abandonware site that was stripped of the ads and it was about 20 megs. You can also apparently still get GTA 2 on freeloader.com. I didnt try to download it, because I bought it already, but if its anything like their version of GTA London, they ripped the music out which isnt a big deal.
But NO WAY is it over 300 megs. That doesnt make any sense at all. Am I reading this right, because I couldnt get it to download using GetRight, and I cant not use it because Id have to leave my computer online for about 3 days straight at 300 megs. I installed GTA from the original cd and its 60 megs. How much could they have added? Yes, the game ran way too fast and would crash randomly on modern computer, but did it take a 240 mb patch to fix that? What the hell is going on?

if ur on a 56k modem it would take u 15 hours approx. more likely to be 16.
and i don't know why its over 300 megs. i haven't started downloading it yet. it'll probably say on the rockstar site.

All I saw were demos on the official site, and something asking for your name, address, social security number, mother's maiden name, etc that didnt even work after I spent 10 minutes filling out all the information.
The GTA cd is 80 megs. According to the screenshots, there are no graphics improvement, no new levels, no justification for 240 extra megabytes.

go to the classics section. i've just been there myself and the only thing they are offering is full version GTA. if u have a problem about downloading the 320 meg file then don't bother. i've downloaded much bigger files and i'm only on 56k.

Well I can't account for 240 extra megs, but if I'm not mistaken they did add multiplayer support to it, so. Eh maybe.

GTA always had multiplayer support.
I did find a link on that mirror site that lets you use download accellorators. I dont know if this will work if you just paste it in, but you can look around.

Ive been downloading it for the past 30 minutes, and I just now got to 1%. There had better be drastic improvements to this game and not just be a 240 mb patch for a game I already bought. 19 hours for a patch...Rockstar is the worst company ever

WOW man thanx for the mirrors!
I had been looking for those....
Btw, it's really strange. You can easily download gta 1 and better games on kazaa. But when a game like this comes out and its legally free, everyone rushes too it like hell....
Unbelievable.

yeah its surprising. i suppose the fact that:
a) its legally free
b) its been updated so will run fine on new machines
c) has multiplayer support (allegedly - i still havent' downloaded it yet)
d) it won't contain any viruses
e) it will run once downloaded
might have something to do with it. btw i already own this game but it goes crazy on my new pc.
