It's a shame to realize that this KaZaA Lite section won't have a program to back it up much longer. The death of KaZaA Lite may come within a few months or so as KaZaA continues to make threats and switch over o a subscription service. It's quite the shame, it's only been around for like 2 months or so, no one really got a chance to see where it would go. And it's new distribution site too, it's got about a million hits in like a week, it would be awful to see that go to a waste too. I hope that KaZaA Lite's still has a chance to survive.

I don't think Sharman Networks will sue. By sueing it would reveal where they are located. Their physical location is unknown. This would make them more prone to a lawsuit from the Australian Authorities or RIAA.

Kazaa's subscription service will simly be a better version of the software they have at the moment. It will not effect the network.

I believe in the latest news story from cnet, shamen's info has finally been revealed (who they are, who runs it, where it's located ... some tiny pacific island tax haven I believe). And they are moving quite agressively in getting a few things done, namely trying to shut down KazaaLite. So far they've sent some nasty emails and gotten a few isp's to take down kazaaLite pages. They are evil people.

Doubtless the best method is the old upgrade switcharoo, but they seem (suprisingly) reluctant to pull that scam yet. Maybe it would look bad in their RIAA defense if they pulled the same trick twice, maybe it just takes some time to write the new code. Either way, some interesting thoughts on that on the napsterites.net forum on that.

That is where they are registered. Not where they are located. They are located SOMEWHERE in Australia.

Evil people for wanting a hacked veriosn of their software removed? :cross

My sarcasm meter is broken, I dunno how to interpret.

Evil because they create and release software who's primary goal is to trade copyrighted material. Then they bundle it with spyware. And then they push hidden software onto end user machines without so much as a warning. Software designed to take over "spare" cycles and HD space for them to sell to secret people and secret companies to do secret things. And when people try to re-establish control over their machines, they send out the lawyers. Lawyers who crafted the gigantic EULA that you need a law degree to read through (sidenote: When did the world suddenly decide you need a law degree to do anything anymore. Should I soon expect to sign an EULA whenever I buy Frosted Flakes?).

Not that we're angels either :shy

Oh, and thanks for the correction on location of company. You appear to be correct, company is registerred as Aussie, but darned if I can find an addy.

[edit: forgot to add:]

And finally, let's not forget that Kazaa's RIAA defense is that they can't control what end users do with the Kazaa/Grokster client. I would think KazaaLite is a very potent example of that lack of control. Clamping down too hard on KL might not be a good thing for them in that case. Just my $0.02

I think the clamping down on Open FT didn't do a court case any favours. By removing Open FT and Morpheus they proved the system can be shut down by removing support for clients.

KL is not a seperate client. I don't think its removal would effect any future court case.

It is worth noting that the RIAA are not suing the current owners of KaZaA

kazaa lite will always be around, because it runs off the servers(others computers) so if kazaa the normal version becomes a subscription, the free version(kazaalite) will just read the machines and skip the purchasing part
